want to try an XFX RX 460 grafics card on a E8400 + Win10 32-bit configuration
I just can't seem to run the installation CD. So I run directly setup from the map win10-32 on the CD.
What ever I do, the configuration loads the default Windows driver
The AMD Autodetect finds: A-series APU
In the Bios I allready selected "Auto" (=use add-in card)
I also disabled "automaticly download manufacturers' apps and ..."
Does someone have a good idea??

Not from what I was looking at regarding the specs for RX 460 GPUs. It doesn't matter much.

I am looking at the power limitations of your PCIe slot as the likely issue at this point. What variant of Optiplex 960 are you using?

The PCIe slot only provides up to 35w of power (this issue came up recently in another thread and I just recalled that issue). That may simply not be enough for the RX 460 to work properly and I suspect is the root of the problem.

I can't recall, but somewhere I read the powerconsumption was <60Watt
Which is probably including the fan
The card is powered via PCIe but also a 6pin-cable
Considering the previous powersupply rating 240W, I presumed 400W would be sufficient

Differs the powersupply via PCIe in the type of PCI-slot (2.0, 3.0, ..) or in the make/modell of the motherboard ?

Solution

You really can't upgrade the motherboard in the Optiplex with a standard motherboard, if that is what you are thinking. You would need to install another similar Dell motherboard (form factor and connectors are the issue).

You would essentially need to build a new rig with more modern components.
