Hi there. Recently reformatted my comp to Windows 8, this is actually my third format as I tend to do it somewhat regularly.

Anyway when I do this I always have a designated hard drive in my computer holding programs files and games I know I'm going to reinstall.

Anyway for some reason, this time round, MSI installers keep failing on this hard drive saying "The system cannot open the device or file specified". But the problem is rectified if copied to the C drive and installed from there.

Any ideas? I've had a wee browse around google to no avail. All permissions are looking good to me too.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
As noted, if you are clean installing Win-8, have only the System drive connected C:\, and your secondary drives not connected until after installation is complete. When you have a secondary drive attached, the MS Reserved Partition or EFI partition may be placed on the this drive, or if it is marked as Active. For clean installations, use the Custom install, which will format the C:\ drive and place the required partitions and boot files properly.

I have the same problem, I installed win10 after dealing with that mess 2 days later, formatted and installed win7. anything that is on the secondary drive will not install. I too have found the if i copy the program over to the c drive, install NP. So how do you fix this?
This is the only place on all of the internet that acutely found this problem is this post
