Solution
just get a card with that pci-e x1 interface

[InterfacePCI Express x1 ]

that will slide right in to that slot in your picture above [that's if your graphics card don't block it ]

like I said if you had a usb adaptor you would be up and running it now not here at toms fooling around

I've been using this one [ with the Atheros chipset] for several years on several pc's and plugs in just as easy as a keyboard or pendrive don't even need to shut down any computer to remove it or move it over to a different computer just plug in and play .. zip -zap -pow.... not worry about board slots or if each bord I what to use it on got the correct slots or anything...
well ?? dint know but I do know that's why I do the usb adaptors fits everything with a usb port easily moved to one computer to the next just pull it out of one and stick it in the other. don't interfere with motherboards slots like graphics card blocks the slot you need for the wireless card or what have you

maybe rma it back for exchange for a usb type adaptor ?? thing is you got to know with a card what interface it has to use and if with another card you need if its going to be blocked or will it block something ??

The problem is that that is a PCI adapter, but PCI <> PCIe, & your motherboard only has PCIe slots (https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_VII_HERO/specifications/). This is why you see "PCIE" in the slot label names on the board.

You need something like their TL-WN881ND (http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/cat-11_TL-WN881ND.html), which uses the "short" version of the PCIe slot (i.e. just like the one labeled "PCIEX1_3" in your screenshot).

yup, one adaptor for 3 computers and don't care about board slots or interfering with other cards on the board , how better and easy is that ??

Solution
That's a pretty good card, but dated, those came out around 2008 (still have one I think 😉 ), as mentioned above, the USB adapters are more common and can be a better bet today, I like that they can have a USB cable attached to move them around to get the best reception if a bit far from your router

to what tradesman1 said above

- if you look at getting a new adaptor go to there support page and see when the last driver update was for it .. some selling as new today may not of had a driver update in quite some time and can be a few years old - I mean why buy a new adaptor that has not had a driver update since 2005 or something like that ??

then about the range. this one I use I said above , picks up my neighbors router thats every bit of 300' away so maybe luck ??? his router putting out like a banshee ?? anyway it there in my list of connections
