Hi,
my friend has a PC:
AMD k6-2 350Mhz
Super7 ALIM1542 Baby-AT Mainboard
Chipset: ALI-VM1542 & M1543
AWARD Green BIOS

Trying to install Westerndigital ATA/66 7200 RPM 40GB HDD, and BIOS can't see HDD.
I suspect BIOS need upgrade.
There is a mainboard manual but can't find manufacturer. How can I upgrade BIOS thank you very much.
Also how do you know what cpu type it is K6-2 E- or K6-2 E+ ?
Thank you very much.

Check if Western Digital has a small piece of software that will fix the problem.

I thought WD had troubles with jumpers. Try doing it with the jumpers in the right place (as per the instructions).
If that doesn't work, try doing it with no jumpers on at all.
Just a thought.

Sounds like it is a Giga-byte motherboard. Check out there site at http://www.giga-byte.com. The Model is most likely GA-5AA (Rev 3.2). The model should be on the Motherboard itself ... I would look!

I have a MSI 5169 V4.0 K2-450 motherboard and it will not accept a 40 GB hard drive from Fujistu (MPG 3409) no matter what I tried including BIOS upgrades.

However, the SOYO 5EMA+ (K6-2 motherboard) used the new hard drive with no problems.

It's unfortunate but there is no way to fix it currently. I've tried both fujitsu and msi web pages and tech support.

I downloaded the BIOS from gigabyte and flashed BIOS ROM.
When I restart PC, it says AMD K6-2 350Mhz and 128MB RAM and gives BEEP sound and says "Wrong CMOS settings. Press F1 to enter set up" When I hit F1 nothing shows up in screen.. :-(
Is there any way to recover this?

To fix the problem you have to know exactly what motherboard you have. Then go on the internet to get the motherboard manual.

You have to read how to reset the bios. The worst case to to get the EPROM flashed with the right bios.

GOOD LUCK!
