Hello...I just reformatted a 10 GB HD inside an IBM Aptiva 580. The HD also has 1 logical partition. I then set the BIOS on the mobo to boot from the CD-ROM. I installed the XP Pro boot disc and the mobo instead went to the floppy drive to boot. From the floppy drive I selected the F drive which is where the XP Pro boot CD resided. Upon typing the name of the seyup file on the F prompt, I receved the message " will not run from DOS". Why cant I install the CP Pro boot disc or get it recognized from the CD-ROM F drive? This used to be a no brainer and I am baffled now. I also have the XP Pro CD which contains the OS. I just want to install XP Pro onto this 10 GB HDD.
Thank you.

Thanks.

You need to boot directly from CD or <b><A HREF="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310994" target="_new"><font color=red>WinXP setup disks</A></b></font color=red> (6 floppy disks). WinXP does not run from DOS.

However, as khha4113 mentioned, the best method is to install directly from the CD or WinXP setup disks.

If you tried the setup.exe command it won't work in DOS.
What you need to do is use the DOS executable which is winnt.exe located in the I386 Directory on the XP CD.

Next time Navigate to F:\I386 and then run winnt.exe Your install will start.

You are wrong. You can start an Install of XP or Win2K any versionm using a win98 boot disk with CD Rom support

The best solution, I think, is the first link which Toey have provided...HOW TO: start Windows XP setup from MS DOS prompt. That page also includes the info about how and why to use 'smartdrv' before running Windows XP setup from MS DOS.

You're right about Winnt.exe but Setup.exe cannot run from DOS. I forgot using Winnt.exe in CD with MS-DOS. I guess because I never have the need to boot from DOS for XP's installation (but I used it for W2k's a few years back).
