For the past few nights ive been trying to overclock my 6600k but cant even get it to "36" without it failing. Ive tried everything i can think of with no luck. My current setup is
Asus z170-a Mobo
Intel i5 6600K cpu
H100i v2 cooler
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4 3200 Ram
Asus 1070 duel
Sentey 750w psu
Any idea what the issue could be? been bugging me for a while now a buddy of mines has almost the same setup as me and was abled to overclock his to 44

Solution
Like everyone is saying disable any boosts. I have an 850w power supply. I could only overclock my 5820k to 4.1ghz unlike everybody else overclocking to 4.5 or 4.6ghz. I upgraded my 770 to a 1050 ti which uses much much less power and now I able to overclock my cpu like everybody else.

edit: so take the video card out and see if you can overclock to 44 then you will know if it's a power issue
My i5 6600k is currently overclocked to 4.3GHz at 1.320V. Try raising your VCore by .1/.2/.3V. I don't know but you might have been unlucky enough to get the worst silicon ever. What temperatures do you currently get?

Thats what im thinking. i over clocked my i5 6600k to 4.4. My temps are nice and cool. I didn't even adjust voltages or any thing. OP says he cant even achieve 3.6. Correct me if im wrong but doesn't the i5 boost to 39? it should be able to at least achieve its boost clock.

I'd say yes and no. That 3.9 Boost is on 1 core only. If it tries to boost more than 1 core, the boost will drop below 3.9 but still above the stock speed.

What power supply do you have? I'm overclocking my i5 6600k to 4.5GHz and running my MSI GTX 1060 GAMING X 3GB slightly above 2000mhz core clock. And all this is on a 550W powersupply.

The 770 has 1x pci-e 6 pin + 1x pci-e 8 pin + pci-e power which should draw 75 150 75 watts respectively for a total of 300W, but more importantly it is drawing 12v power. That is 25 amps of 12 volt. My power supply only has 25 amps on the 12 volt rail. That leaves no 12v for the rest of the system when the 770 is under max load. Nvidia recommends having 42 amps on the 12v rail(s) when using this card. The 1070 has 1x pci-e 8pin connector (maybe your asus one has more though) so it should draw 75 watts from the pci-e express slot and 150 from the 8 pin. that's 225w which equals 18.75amps. Going with nvidia recommendation you should have 31.5 amps on your 12 volt rail(s). You also using sli so that means even more 12v power. Is it double? I have no idea. Check your 12v amperage on your power supply.
