Hello. I've recently installed Windows Xp on my laptop and the default media software was an ugly old version of windows media player so I installed KMPlayer instead but it was very slow so I unistalled it. Now after I made some software updates on my laptop I am using the windows media player 11 I think ( a new version). The problem is that I can't play video files. Every video has Type of file : KMPlayer.mp4 . When I click on a video file it says: Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

Solution
I'm a die-hard Windows XP Pro user myself and "had" the same problems you have. My solution is to install K-Lite Codec Pack Standard 11.7.0, which can be obtained HERE.
It includes Media Player Classic, a very good video player, if you tick the box to install it too (do it). This codec pack allows many other players to also play difficult files too, such as VLC can then play Blue-Ray movie files (get VLC player ver. 1.1.11 (best ever)). VLC 1.1.11 can be downloaded from HERE

Why install Media Player Classic?
With this codec pack, it plays just about anything.
It's nice to hit alt + Enter and go to or from full screen
It has low overhead when running
It works with AMD...
Hi, how old is your laptop? Did you manage to obtain and install all the necessary drivers for XP?
It's likely that the latest version of windows media player has compatibility issues on WinXP as Microsoft no longer support this OS. Try uninstalling the later version and searching the web for an older version, OR download VLC media player.

Also, try this codec pack with a media player! http://www.cccp-project.net/

Well my drivers are all updated and my laptop is Acer aspire one ao531h. This morning I went to the registry and deleted anything related to KMPlayer and now the type of file for my videos is only mp4 but wmp11 can't support mp4 files and basically I have the same issue. At first when I installed WinXP I could see movies and then everything changed after I installed and then unistalled KMPlayer. I really prefer not to install any other program.

It works with AMD HD video cards "Avivo" Theater Mode, (dual screens watching movies) (This ended with XP, so if you go to Vista, Win 7 or higher, you'll loose this) (VLC 1.1.11 works with "Avivo" too)
It can figure out and play Blue-Ray Playlst (mpls) files to watch multi-file, segmented Blue-Ray movies, if you can pick the correct playlist file for the movie (practice makes perfect).
Its just simple to use.

Disclaimer (of course !)
Blue-ray movies must be decoded using something like SlySoft AnyDVD HD to play on just about any player. (Free for 21 days, then must be purchased)

EDIT !

Your problem of Windoze insisting on playing files using KMPlayer (or any other player you don't like) can be solved by looking at a video file in Windows Explorer, right-click the file, choose "Open with" then "Choose Program" Choose your preferred program, tick the box at bottom that says "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and of course, click "ok"

Solution
I already solved it mate. I installed Media Player Classic and I can play my files. Though I knew about the Klite codec pack I wanted a simple solution and I found it. Anyway, thank you for your reply.
