Hi, Sorry for the long post but does anyone have any idea what’s happening here? I had a dual boot system that worked flawlessly but was running out of space so I decided to clone my dual boot system of Linux Mint 21.2 and Windows 10 with macrium reflect to a larger SSD and thought all had gone well until I noticed that my 1tb storage hard drive (ntfs) mounted OK in Linux and I could use it but it would not let me cut anything from it or paste anything to it or save any changes to it, the right click options were greyed out. I am not aware of doing anything to cause this behavior. Windows 10 was not affected and worked fine. I decided to scrap the dual boot and did clean installs of Linux Mint 22 on the new samsung 870evo and Windows 10 on the old samsung 850evo.
I thought everything was OK for a while. I became aware as I was using the computer that the cut and paste problems had returned and affected all three sata SSD’s connected to the motherboard except the Linux Mint one. I have Linux on a new Samsung 870 500gb SSD and the three other sata drives connected are all ntfs and master boot record. One SSD for Windows, One 1tb hard drive for storage and one SSD for old steam games. All three mount in linux and can be accessed but the cut and paste problem is on all three them with options greyed out and Libre Office docs load in read mode only from these.
Again Windows has no problems with these drives.
USB ntfs external hard drives and fat32 flash pens work with no problems.
I tried running live off my Linux Mint 21.2 and 22 installer USB drives, which you can do and the problem was still there using these.
I made an Ubuntu Mate 22.04.05 installation USB and tried running live off that and the problem was not there, everything worked.
Back to the Mint 22 installation and everything now working fine?
Booted into Windows which said it had to scan and fix the 1tb hard drive, let it do it. All working in Windows but booting back into mint 22 the problems had returned?
Rerun of Ubuntu Mate from the installation USB drive fixed everything again.
Back in Mint 22 all working again.
Windows worked and did not complain this time.
Everything working OK for a few days and the cut and paste problem has returned on all three sata drives so I can’t save anything to my storage drive, no idea why. Not aware of doing anything.
Rerun of Ubuntu Mate from the installation USB drive and everything fixed again?
I don’t know what to do next. I don’t know if it’s a software or hardware problem or what’s triggering it?
The only thing I can think of that might be possibly be relevant is when I first installed the new 870evo SSD I moved the old 850evo from sata 1 on the motherboard to another sata port and connected the new one to sata 1. If they are all the same speed I did not think it mattered which one you connected to. I also reset the bios by replacing the battery at the same time.
Do I reformat all my drives and start again? Do I get rid of the old spinning 1tb drive and replace with a new SSD, though tests say the drive is OK?
My system is quite old but has and would continue to serve me well for what I need a computer for. Asus H170 pro motherboard. Intel i3 6100. 16gb ddr4 ram. Radion RX570 Graphics Card.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dave.
