So A few days ago I called Verizon to switch the ont ethernet on so I could use ethernet cable instead of coax. I then found out that in my living room there is no ethernet port only coax ports on the wall. Furthermore the ont box is outside my house so i cant directly connect my router to it. My question is how can i use Ethernet instead of coax. Do I have to get a ethernet wall port installed or will buying a modem solve my issue

Solution
You do what the cable company does. Run the wire on the outside of the house and drill directly though the wall where you want it to be. You could use that method to run the cable all the way to your living room if it is not too far.....and the wife does not complain about ugly wires on the house.

Powerline networks are simple boxes you plug into the 2 different electrical outlets. You plug a ethernet cable into each and what goes in one comes out the other in a over simplification of how they work. They use the power wires in your house as long extension cables. They work pretty well in most houses.
Not sure what you would hook the modem to, the coax between the ONT and the verizon "modem" is running MoCA if a remember correctly. You can not really get a device that you can hook to the coax except one from verizon.

Although not the optimum solution you could run a ethernet into the house from outside to the nearest point you can get power. You could then use powerline networks between the ONT and the router. It is not normally done this way but technically it should work.

Otherwise have Verizon switch it back to coax and install their router.

Could you elaborate on you mean by run an ethernet into the house from the outside
And what are powerline networks

alright thank you. I have one more question. I want to buy a new router because the current verizon one I have is pretty weak.
I've read that you can just connect a different router via coax with verizon because it wont work.
So if i correct the only way i can use a new router is by using ethernet.
My only choice in order to use a new router is by driling a hole into my house and connecting ethernet cable from ont to router?
(My ont and living room are side by side) its just that the ont is outside of the house

The ONT is "outside"?
That is VERY unusual. Unless we are talking about something not a single family residence.

The ONT is "inside" somewhere.

Consider changing to the Verizon Quantum Gateway router, instead of the standard ActionTec.
It makes a major difference.

I may be mistaken, but would you like for me to take picture just to make sure because there is something else in my basement but i dont know what it is. Also can i use ddwrt on the quantum gateway?

A pic would help.
But there are two similar size boxes involved.
The outside termination thing, and then the inside box, the ONT.

are you sure thats not the ont box because ive searched my entire basement and cant find it

This is the inside ONT (minus the battery cover)
There are some status lights, etc.

(Yes, that is a Commodore VIC-20 and C-64 box in the background)

1. You need to contact Verizon to provision this
2. Inside the panel is a RJ-45 port.
3. Cat5e from that to your router.
4. If you have TV service, the original Verizon router also needs to be in the chain.

Seriously, though...look at the Verizon Quantum gateway for an upgrade. It is way better than the default ActionTec.

I want to use a better router so I can install dwrt.
So all i have to do is drill a hole from the basement floor to my living room to connect the ont to the router?
