Glad you are thinking ahead.

A good way to get a sense about "careers with technology" is to look at employment ads. Search using words such as: computer, network, IT, programming. Read the job descriptions and requirements regarding education and experience.

You can visit corporate websites: Many now have an internal link to "career opportunities", "careers", "employment", "applications". Start with companies you know, companies you have heard of - do not necessarily have to be IT companies per se.

Read online computer/IT magazines. Keep visiting and lurking in forums such as this one. Scan through the tutorials - see what topics appeal to you.

If your school has a counselor meet with him or her. Or go to a local college of any level to meet with a career counselor. Often those folks are really overwhelmed but will be able to give you some basic suggestions regarding career selection.

Consider the military if that is at all viable.

Fortunately you have a couple of years so do not put yourself under a great deal of pressure for a decision. Most people, including myself, have had multiple careers. Things will change.

So enjoy High School as hard as it is. Keep your grades up, stay out of trouble, and remember that even if there is not much that you can control in your life you can still control your attitude.

As hard as it is is the right titel to that - I think it is for everyone, just try to get through school as good as possible then your career life starts with money and everything - more enjoyable!

IT is a very large specialised field, and it is tough to figure out where to begin. If you just try and focus on your grades at the moment, and try your best to learn a little about all of these fields and what they cover, then you will eventually gravitate to one that you feel comfortable in.

Having a trade skill like welding will be a great benefit to you in the future also, so even if you don't follow the IT route completely, you can still fall back on your trade skills. Maybe even incorporate the two into a specific career path down the line!

It sounds like you have your head screwed on anyway, so just try and keep an open mind until you know where you are headed. It will start to make sense to you.

Career and technical education is a term applied to schools, institutions, and educational programs that specialize in the skilled trades, applied sciences, modern technologies, and career preparation.
