Case fan not spinning when attached to PSU

I just bought a case fan to install on the back grating of my Dell XPS 420 to increase airflow since I am planning on upgrading more components. It has a male and a female 4 pin Molex connector, which I guess is for daisy-chaining.

I attached an open 4 pin connector from my PSU to the connector on the fan. When I booted up, I noticed the fan never turned on. I checked my connection to make sure it wasn't loose, but everything was fine.

I just need to get more exhaust out of the back of my case. I think the included back fan is located in a small space above my PSU to cool it.

I have no idea what to try at this point :??:... I couldn't find any open 3/4 pin motherboard connections either. Maybe I can get a Molex adaptor to plug into an open SATA port or PCI slot?

you plugged in the 4 pin molex from the fan with the 4 pin molex from the power supply. what about between the molex from the fan with the fan itself? I mean you got a big 4 pin for molex and a small 3/4 pin female header like connector that usually go to the mobo, is it connected together?

check to see if the molex power string is actually connected to the psu if it's modular.
check to see if the fan is actually connected with the molex connector which is actually connected with the molex from psu.
does your fan spin if you temporarily connect it with a 3/4 pin on mobo that says sys fan?

for god's sake do not put molex connector on open sata port/pci slot.
everything has a specific purpose on mobo computer please do not put anything where they are not supposed to go.

There were no small 3-4 pin connectors coming from the fan so I can't test that. I directly connected the fans large 4-pin female connector to the psu's 4 pin male connector.

There are 2 connectors on the same psu cable, one in the middle and one at the end. Does it matter which large 4 pin connector I use (one in middle or on end)?

regarding psu molex connector, no middle or end position does not matter as long as it is plugged in to the psu if your psu is modular, if psu is not modular don't worry about it.

regarding there were no small 3-4 pin connector, how are you supposed to connect it to mobo (if you had open sysfan on mobo)? are you saying the fan only have molex connector and nothing else? How old of a model is the fan? brand and model of case fan?

I bought this because I could not find any open ports on my motherboard for an extra fan. Ill be ok if it's loud/running at 100 if I don't have a choice, but it won't even power on so I'm stuck.

Welp. I changed the fan's connector to next open 4 pin connector and it came on.

Now I just gotta try to find a simple fan controller.

No, If that fan is not working when connected to a PSU Molex output, try checking a couple of things.

1. Try a different Molex output from the PSU. Maybe the one you are using is faulty or has a bad connection.
2. Can you test the fan using another supply of 12 VDC? An automobile battery will work. Connect the battery terminals to the two pins of the fan's male Molex connector. If the fan still does not work, the fan is faulty.
