So i am doing a build for a friend in the nzxt s340 elite, and i am using a kraken x62 (240mm) for my cpu, and i dont really want to pull or push hot air into the case, so would it be okay to set the fans to either push or pull the hot air out the front of the case?

Thanks!

There are no hard-and-fast rules but, like instyne above mentions, there are common conventions. You need air flow, and how you facilitate that air flow is up to you. Here are a few things to consider:

  • ■ where are the dust filters? the designers of the case will typically put dust filters where they expect you to draw air in. If you draw air in a different way, you may also draw dust in
    ■ is the machine going to sit on carpet? if so, drawing in air from the bottom of the case can be a problem
    ■ is the machine going to sit near a heat source? if so, don't draw air from that direction
    ■ hot air rises, so fight physics at your own peril
    ■ if you draw air from the bottom, will a huge GPU card prevent the air from getting through...
Most computers are designed to pull room temperature air in the front of the case, blowing it past the harddrive, then the motherboard and exiting through the back or top of the case. your power supply is probably in the back bottom of your case and blows out the back of the case. You said you didn't want to pull hot air into the case, using the method I described will give you better cooling than pulling air in the back. Go to YouTube and search for "computer case ventilation" I just did and it will show you what I'm talking about.

As you can see, it's largely common sense.

If you have the time, experiment with it. Try different configurations and benchmark them under load.

We should get Sheldon Cooper to do a video blog .... Fun With Fans!
