cat6 new home need to run one or two lines each location

Hello, A friend has given me Belden 2412 cat 6 cable to be run in a new home while under construction. I have been told by a few people who do this for a living that i should have two separate cat6 lines run to each location where I might have a tv. I was also told that cat6 is two lines in one strand but are unsure of that. I am not a business just for residential use only.

Mostly the reason to run 2 cables is because if you would ever need a extra one it is extremely expensive. The other options is to run just 1 and place a switch at the far end for multiple devices. If you have lots of cable for free you might as well run it. You can leave the extra ones unterminated in the wall box.

Cat5e and cat6 are pretty much the same and you use whatever is cheaper. Technically cat6 can run 10g at short distance but anyone who can afford 10g ports and machines that can actually use them can afford cat6a cable.

There are forms of cat6 cable that have 2 cable in one there are some that have even 8. Still I suspect you have the standard 4 pair cable which can only run 1 connection at 1g speed. In the "old" days people used to split the cable into 2 groups of 2 pair. This only works at 100m though so it is not done any more.

CAT 6 cable and CAT 5 cable have 8 total wires. 4 of which are needed to run internet (at 100mbs). But while you can spit a single cable into 2 lines, it's far better to use a switch.

The reason to run 2 lines is for internet and phone. Make sure the when you do run the cable you leave about a foot and a half in slack on each end.

would it be to much trouble to share with me what a switch is? I have no idea all I have heard is to do a data port.

Ignore this, Keep It Simple and Stupid.

If you have enough cables and not a big hassle, run TWO cables to each location. However, if you just want to run 1, nobody is gonna laugh.
