[citation][nom]drutort[/nom]this is disappointing, i mean great a game loads faster, but what about all the daily issues with the 2d stuff, that everyone experiences... all they care about is how fast a game loads? that takes a month to fix? looks like someone was on vacation...[/citation]Didn't that driver issue only affect the 5000 series, and also what application are you suffering from severe 2D performance problems? I haven't had any issues with my 4850 for what it's worth, 3D or 2D.

maybe you should do more research. read toms graphics-card hierarchy chart and you'll notice that the 4890 is only one tier above the 9800 GTX+. the difference in FPS you would see would be small or difficult to notice w/o benchmarks.
This is not accurate, the 4890 performs better than the GTX 260 in most cases and in a few limited cases on par with the GTX 285. So 9800 GTX+? The performance level should be fairly higher, certainly noticeable. To the guy with the issue, check the settings within CCC, by default it might have the AA filter or level too high for instance, or vsync is forced on (in which case you could be topping out if you are measuring via 'fps', etc).[/citation]I'd say that in a lot of titles, a 4890 is not a huge boost over a 9800GTX+ (the GTX+ is identical to a GTS 250). It wouldn't make sense to upgrade to a 4890 unless the games you played were favored by the 4800 cards. It would make a lot more sense to upgrade to a 5850, a 275, something higher end. Otherwise, you could just wait and save your cash, there's nothing wrong with a 9800GTX+ unless the rest of your machine is badass.

Speaking of which, who is to say the rest of his system isn't part of the issue?

Ugghh come on ATI fix the GSOD issue first even if it means leaving those who play this one game waiting I much rather be able to have every thing else work properly. =/ At least my x1900xt and 3870 have no issues. ----- nforce4max

My 3870 had a gpu crash every once in a while. It's not heat related - that's been checked. I've tried various driver verions including the native driver for Win7 64-bit and still my card crashes with "no signal" or "out of range" message on the monitor mostly on the Panama Canal map. Everytime I try that map - boom it dies. It has crashed on other maps but maybe only 2 or 3 times out of hundreds as I've played and tested the cause of the gpu crash. Panama Canal map always - ALWAYS kills my 3870. I've even seen someone post an article online with a video clip included showing their rig w/ a 3870 doing the same thing on the same map.

Does anyone here have any ideas on what might fix my 3870 issue outside of waiting for ATI to address it?

This is the EXACT behavior of my 3870. This guy was try to play the Panama Canal map as well.

Well I don't play this game so either play something else or start keeping spare cards on hand. x1900xt, 8800gtx, 8600gt, 7900gtx duo, and many more cards. Need to run vintage glide games well I got a small selection of cards to do hardware mode.

As for these issue something is wrong at the hardware level which is why I am holding buck on any thing newer. 🙁 ATI needs to multy source their GPUs instead of single source which causes issues as seen with the shortages to quality issue as seen with other 40nm parts.
