Catalyst 5.7 breaks LimeWire?

After installing Catalyst 5.7, I noticed a marked improvement in framerates
and smoothness at high AA and AF levels. So that's good news.

However, I also noticed that LimeWire now displays completely blank windows.
First reaction is... huh?! It can't be! Rarely have I seen a driver rev
affect any sort of 2D rendering, especially if it's not directdraw. So I
uninstalled (completely... like as in uninstall via cp, manual regedit, and
"del \docs and settings\~user\.limewire\*.*") limewire and reinstalled.
Still no workie. Next I tried to remove the graphics driver from the
equation all together by remoting into my system via RDP from another box.
Doing it that way results in a working LimeWire. To me that suggests CAT 5.7
is at fault.

Can someone please verify this? I don't feel like uninstalling Cat 5.7 and
reverting unless I have to, because otherwise I like this driver release.

For what it's worth, Cat 5.7 and LimeWire are perfectly compatible on my
system...

Thank you for the confirmation. At this point I'm not really sure what it
could be then. Apparently Cat 5.7 is not at fault. I've also completely
cleaned out and reinstalled Java runtime. No help there.

I'm beginning to suspect that RadLinker is to blame. Whenever I run
radlinker, after a clean Catalyst install, the Color tab gets removed from
the control panel, permanently. It will not come back until Catalyst is
reinstalled. At that point the only way I can control gamma is through
RadLinker. A lot more damage could be taking place below the surface, then
is visible through the Control Panel GUI.

Ok. I just started from scratch, checking LimeWire incrementally, and
discovered that it is definitely RadLinker that was causing LimeWire to stop
displaying anything graphical.

So... there it is. RadLinker breaks LimeWire, or I should say, more
specifically, RadLinker in conjunction with Cat 5.7 will result in LimeWire
being unable to display a GUI.

GOD! Foiled again!!! Scratch the above. It is NOT RadLinker that is causing
it. It IS, in fact, Catalyst 5.7 that breaks LimeWire, however, it only
happens when Direct3D quality is set to either "High Quality" or "Optimal
Quality". It does NOT happen when Direct3D is set to "Balanced" which is the
default, and which is probably why you didn't see the problem.

Try it for yourself. Load Cat 5.7, change Direct3D quality to "Optimal
Quality" and try to run LimeWire.

This is a bug.

WTF? So what does LimeWire use that would be screwed over by Direct3D
settings? A video preview window?

The problem has to do with JAVA and the ATI FSAA settings. (I dont know
if it is the ATI drivers or JAVA to blame) I have experienced the same
problem with both LimeWire and a business application I use that is
written in Java. All you have to do is turn off FSAA when you want to
run LimeWire. In fact when I start LimeWire and see a blank window, I
turn FSAA off and the LimeWire window will appear.

Hmm, interesting. The same goofs that brought us the .NET-based CCC probably
thought Java is no longer part of WinXP...
