CCC Overdrive Fan Control - HD 7770

Hey everyone,

i recently build a new PC with a XFX HD 7770 Dual Dissipation.
I used the Catalyst Control Center to manually set the fan speed from 30 to 20 % ( cant hear it anymore and it idles at 36°C ).

I though it would set the minimum speed and still adjust according to temperature but it seems like
it is fixed at the speed i set.
After a bit of gaming i noticed that the fans where trying to speed up but were just oscillating at around 20% and the temp was at about 85°. After i deactivated OverDrive the fans sped up normally.

Is this normal? the help file of the CCC says it would still automatically regulate the fans even if it is manually set lower when the temp gets to high. At what temp will the software increase fan speed?
Is there a way to only decrease the idle speed? or maybe just set a target temperature?

To answer your question, programs like Catalyst Control will fix a fan speed when you specify a percent. To get what you want you need to change the fan profile. The profile tells the fan how fast to spin based on the temperature reading. It gets graphically represented with a "fan curve."

The card comes with a default profile, and it seem you'd like to take control over that. Perhaps try a program like MSI's Afterburner to give you control over the fan speed - don't know if it offers more than Catalyst Control. But you'd be looking for a program that lets you define a fan curve, rather than set the fan speed. I've linked a YouTube video explaining how to get it and use the fan control. Give it a shot, and if it doesn't have anything to set fan curves or profiles, then you'll have to move on to the next program. Good luck!

i don't use ccc, but i would imagine your supposition is correct.


While not answering your question per se,

What does XFX supply for such control. I use my HIS cards own software and is pretty damn good at manually controlling fans and temp in combination.

haven't tried the XFX software, but the curve adjustment in Afterburner looks perfect!

The overdrive manual fan adjustment seems to be pretty useless..
