CD Burner Comparison

I have been recomended to get a Plextor CD burner. What makes this burner better than any other one? Such as a Creative Labs.

When I installed a CD burner for a friend. I put it on the same ribbon cable as the CD-ROM. It is an 8x and takes about 30 minutes to duplicate a full audio CD. Is this normal. Would performance be better if it was on it's own IDE port?

Plextor drives are recommended because they tend to be the most reliable. As for IDE configuration, yes, you would benefit if the CD-RW drive was on its own channel.

Forgot about the AudioCD question. It would be normal if he is duplicating at a slower speed - it really depends on what speed he is using. Very few CD-ROMs can keep up with 8x read.

If you put two drives on the same ribbon cable, both will transfer data at the speed of the slower one. Since your CD-ROM drive is most probably rated more than 8x, it is not going to affect the data transfer with your CD-Writer. So, its just like having the CD-Writer sole on an IDE port.

a few questions
do you burn "on the fly" from one cd to another at same time or do you have it copy to hdd first?
also there is data read speed on a cd rom and audio read speed, very few cd-roms can read audio at 8x or above most are like 4 or 6.

my advice, if you go cd-cd on the fly put the burner on as slave to the hdd because ide controller cant read/write to 2 devices on same channel at same time.
Since i very rarely do on the fly burning i would put it on as slave to cd-rom because it will be coming from the hdd

source cd------->image on hdd--------->CD-burner
of course since i have a scsi burner (smart and friendly 8X20)this dont matter to me personally,
but i configured 100's of these at my job.
