left click start in the lower left hand of the screen
left click run
type regedit
left click OK
Now the registry editor will come up
double left click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
double left click on SYSTEM
double left click on CurrentControlSet
double left click on Control
double left click on Class
double left click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
look on the right side of the window for upper filters
right click on upper filters
left click delete
windows will then ask you to confirm deletion
click yes
look on the right side of the window for lower filters
if you do not see lower filters, you may be out of luck on this one.
right click on lower filters
left click on delete
windows will then ask to confirm deletion
click yes
Close all the windows that are open
restart the computer

hi, i did all this... it didn't work cuz (most likely bcuz i think my cd - rom software vanished long ago some how). And after I followed these directions, my outlook express nor will any word documents work! I looked at you ratings b4 i followed your advice cuz some people get their kicks from messin up other peps computers, it looked like you were rated good... so what gives? did I wipe stuff off my computer now , r u good or bad?

wow that is a lot of instructions. I would have first asked if the optical drive is seen by the bios during POST. if it IS seen by the bios, is it listed in the device manager? If it is not listed in the bios then its a hardware issue not windows.

im so sorry soundguruman... you are a good guy. I will give u a gold star if I can help somehow... Like I said, it didnt work for me bcuz I dont think the cd-rom software even exists on my computer... (now that i see nhasians comment...actually, I dont think my computer even sees the drive)

As far as my word & express goes, they're working now, so i have no idea what happened there, but it wasn't cuz of ur instructions after all, I'm sorry I thought it was that. Unfortunately, I followed advice online b4 on how to speed up my laptop computer, and it really was directions on how to wipe out my entire harddrive (& still doesnt work)!!! Thanx tho
