so i will be changing my cpu very shortly and of course that means changing the MOB, but do i need to change my RAM or can i just re-use the sticks i have.

Solution
SKylake and the Z170 mobos are DDR4 based and will need new DRAM, could go Skylake with a lower end DDR3 mobo but you wouldn't be happy. Skylake is designed towards 2133 DDR4 and though backward compatible to DDR3L, generally you are looking at 1866 as the best in DDR3L
Because you don't post what cpu/mb you will buy, we can't say you will need the new RAM or not. Like if you will buy the intel MB, like the Z skylake MB, you will need the DDR4 RAM, if the old MB used the DDR3, but some of the skylate MB will use DDR3 RAM too.
If you will buy the AMD, you can reuse the RAM, but depends on what you want.

+1 Might list what you have and what you are thinking of getting - if rig is older and using say 1066 DDR3 and your looking at a newer Z97 or whatever the slow DRAM could bottleneck the CPU

i will be getting a core i5 6600k and i am thinking about the asus z170a for the motherboard. I am not sure about the motherboard yet because if i can find a cheaper MB worth taking a look at i will consider it. my current ram are a set of 2 sticks of 4gb hyperx ddr3
