In the XP notification area there left arrowhead to show hdden
icons.

If I move my cursor away from the notification area then the hidden
icons are covered again after about 5 seconds.

How can I make the hidden icons stay on display for longer than
that? Ideally I would like to toggle reveal/cover the "hidden"
icons.

Start, Settings, Taskbar and Start Menu, uncheck Hide inactive icons or
click Customize.

Ron, thanks for the info but I am already using the options you
refer to.

My question is how can I make the hidden icons stay revealed for
longer after I press the button next to the visible icons in the
notification area.

Hi,

If you want them to stay longer then disable the feature of using hide
inactive icons. then they will be always visible.
