changing motherboard functionaity

i recently changed my motherboard and i ama nt sute of the serial number, do i need it to install a new os, since my laptop switches off after some time.

You only need your motherboard's serial number to register it for the manufacturers warranty, you don't need it to install an OS. As for your laptop turning off after some time, are you sure that it's not the power save feature putting the laptop to sleep?

the laptop goes completely off and doesnt just go to sleep and the battery is flactuating. please help?

What Laptop is it? I had a Toshiba Satellite that would also turn off and that was due to a loose power cable socket. Does the laptop actually show that it is plugged in? You can tell by looking for the battery symbol in the system tray which should have a cable showing on it when plugged in.
