Dear reader of this thread,

tl;dr at the bottom.

My old desktop computer from my youth(i think the case is over 6 years old lol, components where upgraded bc a lightning strike fried the mobo and thus everything on it (sadly we DID have lightning protection on our power outlet, but the lightning hit trough the copper cable thingy from the modem, into every internet telephone and tv in the whole street, FFS!). i am planning to upgrade it so i can run a tekkit classic server on it for some friends (about 20/25 people but they are never on at the same time). it has a intel cpu that runs at 3.12ghz i believe(intel core 2 dual E8500), and i think(?) that is enough for that, the main problem is the ram. it only has 2 gb of DDR2 ram. and the mobo only supports 2 slots of DDR2 ram. the mobo is: gigabyte ga-g31m-es2l

tl;dr version

what needs upgrading for a modded minecraft server for 15 people at the same time, and is it worth it to upgrade or just replace it all.

cpu: intel core 2 dual E8500
Ram: 2gb ddr2 1066
mobo: gigabyte ga-g31m-es2l
i have some 250 gb harddrive but i dont really care about that, i can always upgrade that.

thanks for the advise guys and girls.

For a server of 20/25, assuming maybe 5-10 are on a time, you would probably want more RAM. I'd guess 4GB minimum for that many people, depending on the size of the map. Your motherboard spec sheet says 4GB is the limit, so if it's not enough you'll need a new motherboard. A cheap SSD would help save times as well, such as when you do backups.

If you want to minimize the spending on the upgrade, I would suggest roaming ebay for a while until you find a dual channel ddr2 4GB RAM kit. If not, here's the cheapest 4GB dual channel ddr2 kit on Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA76H2N06463

thanks for the answer! pretty much what i wanted to know. i will probably upgrade the motherboard then, and the ram you linked wouldnt work on my current setup since it runs intel and this ram says it doesnt work on intel based motherboards.
