I thought I would start here. After scheduling check disk for the next time the computer is started, check disk does not appear and windows continues to boot normally. In the past, after the bios info was displayed and the option to press F8 for advanced options expired, check disk would display with an opportunity to cancel it in 10 seconds, then it would proceed through each of the 3 steps, then display the results. This no longer occurs. It as if I never scheduled the check disk in the first place. So now I'm fustrated that I cannot run check disk and I'm reluctant to take the time to reinstall Windows and my software. If anyone is willing to help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it. I will check here once a day. I have Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4.

Some AV locks the drive before chkdsk can gain exclusive access to the
drive, hence it can't run. In this case you can boot the recovery console
and run
chkdsk /r
from the command line. (/r implies /f and /p)

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Once the password has been
validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access
to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your
computer: %systemroot% and %windir%
