My computer has been running CHKDSK for more than two hours and it is stuck at 39% for the most part of those two hours. I am thinking of doing a hard reset (holding the on/off button for more than five seconds. Can I do that without harming anything?

I decided to run CHKDSK because the computer did not turn off when I instructed it to do so, and I always had to hold the on/off switch. Please help.

1- You can cancel it and start it again after a while (or after reboot).
2- Two possible reasons are usually dirty bits or wrong driver for storage device.
In a first case it is danger situation and it is job for your technical support.
With second issue it is important to read what chipset your comp has and from Device Manager
what version of driver is installed.
