[SOLVED] Choose CPU between i5-10600 and i7-10700 in brand PC

Hi. I am trying to get a new brand PC so I have limited customize option and I can't modify the cooler. I am running Solidworks which is focus more on single core performance.

Between i5-10600 and i7-10700. by considering more on single core performance, which one is better to me? Both the unit comes with same brand case SFF and same power supply. Both of them comes with turbo 4.8GHz. But i5-10600 comes with higher base 3.3GHZ than i7-10700 2.9GHz. Is that means i5 may be better than i7 in most stable single core application software? Is it necessary pay a bit more to i7? I am curious is i7 will be getting more performance or even worse?

What about Xeon-W1250 and i3-10100? The single core base speed of i3-10100 is even higher at 3.6GHz. Why Intel set such strenge base speed i3 > i5 > i7?

It's not all about base clock. For single-core performance, i3-10100 looses to i5-10500,

Why Intel set such strenge base speed i3 > i5 > i7?

10th gen i3 - entry level, 4C/8T @ 3.6 GHz
10th gen i5 - mainstream 6C/12T @ 3.3 Ghz

General consensus is, that if you increase the core amount, you need to reduce base clocks to keep the CPU TDP low. And with lower TDP, there's bigger market.

What about Xeon-W1250

For single-core Xeon is slightly weaker than i7-10700 but that is also negligible,

Thank you Aeacus. I am focus on single core performance. Looks like i5-10600 seems a good option. 6 cores is sufficient to me and I don't need too many cores. i7 comes with lower base speed this is what I am worries about. i5 seem good and also i3 seems good in base speed.

Is there anyone using Solidworks and share your experinece for CPU? I am using Solidworks 3D, assembly and drawing. I don't use motion and simulation at all.

I know you only care about single core performance you said, but here’s the other reason to consider the i7. How long do you plan to keep this pc? If more than a couple of years get the i7. One thing at work, in the past we bought i7 systems. Way back 6-7 years ago. Some of those systems are just now getting replaced. The i5 systems are ok but the performance didn’t hold up as well over time.

Thank you for reply. I will take this long time planing into consideration. I can pay some more cost to have i7-10700. Even I can consider Xeon-W1250 if it really necessary and suit my single core software application. The thing I worried on i7 is the low Base speed 2.9GHz. That means i5 can go at 3.3GHz in worst condition but i7 only at 2.9GHz.

It would be hard to be enthused with SFF case without knowing the cooling solution, and actually testing how well the cooler/CPU on that mainboard performs with that cooling solution in that case... (no one wants to expect '4.8 GHz' routinely but then only see that for 3 seconds at most before seeing 2.8 GHz under many workloads...

Thank you. I never think about this situation yet. You are right. I will change the case to Tower type or MATX.

Also I know you are asking about Intel, but you may look at the amd ryzen cpus and research them. They will offer comparable performance to the Intel cpus, and if you can find one on a sale price it might be worth to consider.

Yes. Agreed not the small form factor. Brand desktop mostly use Intel so most probably I can find suitable AMD's.
