Choosing a future proof GPU

Here is my current computer build.

I am building a new computer and have had to send back a 970 and 390 because both had problems. Now I'm thinking about getting the asus 980 strix. Would the 980 strix be worth the price difference since it's currently on sale for $450? I'm thinking about going back to the 970, but I'm not sure if a 970 would run games coming out next year on 1080 high-ultra at 60+ fps.

I wasn't sure how to word it other than future proof. I'm just looking for a card that will run any game coming out in the near future at the settings I listed above. I was planning on spending around $350, but I saw that the Asus 980 strix is on sell for $450. I'm just curious if the price difference would be worth it.

As Mike said...nothing is future-proof. A salesman came up with that phrase.

GTX 970 is good for up to 1440p Ultra in most games. You'll be fine at 1080p.

Very happy with my Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970. Custom BIOS modded it. going on 4 months now running at 1200/1500 core and 3800 vRAM.

Had to BIOS mod to fix minimum voltages in the midrange boost states to improve stability. Overclocker GPUs are usually sorted for higher leakage, which means the standard power save settings in the new GPU boost are too aggressive. I did not need to bump the max voltages at all, just the low end of the voltages to prevent driver crashes from GPU vDroop. Went from 3-4 crashes per day @ 1425 max core to 2 crashes in the past 3 months with the settings described above. Difference was night and day.

Got a gigabyte g1 970 and it had artifacting right away. So I sent it back and decided on a MSI r9 390. The 390 I got would hit 90c in under 2 minutes of gaming and black screen and I would have to alt f4 and wait for temps to drop to get the display back. I've heard a few people having problems with the 390 so i thought about going back to the 970. I saw the Asus 980 strix was on sale so I was curious if the performance difference is worth the dollar difference.

well looking at the wither 3 witch at this time is one of the most demanding games for pc not counting the broke af batman a 980 will give about 10~20 fps boost, its really up to you if that is worth it.
I personally would get it but i spend way to much money on pc stuff already lol.

PS DX12 in windows 10 may be bringing a supposed 30%boost in performance give or take

1.it will still be a year plus before we get equipment with that on it
2.why would you wait
3.that will eventually be outdated as well what is your point

HBM is on AMD Fury and Fury X already sold in stores

I'm just looking for a card that I would not have to worry about replacing for a while. The way I saw it was the $100 price difference would probably give more time before I would have to upgrade or go sli.

Yea I got a refund, my 390 is currently being sent back but I talked to a rep and asked if could just get a refund instead of a replacement if I bought the 980 right now.

at this point i see it more of a yearly investment the amount off money you spend now will most likely be similar to your next upgrade give or take budget and inflation
