I have never built before, but really want to get into 60Hzt 4k gaming and VR. I've picked specs as follows:

i7-6850k - (I need 40 PCI express lanes) the plan is to sli in about a year.

Titan x pascal - (on sale $500 off, gotta take advantage, its same price as a 1080 at memory express until Oct. 31).

Motherboard? - (Asus strix - edition 10) I'm hoping to save money in this area but not decrease the performance of other parts. I could upgrade when I do the sli upgrade.

Ram DDR4

SSD 256 950 pro - I would like to take advantage of the extra pcl lines provided by the 6850k.

Basically, with the top end Asus Rampage V Edition 10 every thing else such as the cooling system, case, power supply etc. comes to CA$3135. (https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/)
I'm trying to get the price down and I'm thinking of compromising on the motherboard and possibly SSD. What should I do? This is my first build, I've spent the last 3 days reading about components and about what they all do, so I'm still at complete newb status. :)

It's not a bad card, but it's not the card you thought it was, it's the generation prior. For the same $ as the 1080, the 1080 would be the better buy.

Out of curiosity, where are you located? Calgary/Edmonton? Or are you shopping online?

Honestly, to bring the cost down, I'd look to CPU, Mobo, PSU etc - the i7-6800K would be fine for SLI. 28PCIe lanes, x16 & x8 wouldn't show any noticeable performance drop over a 6850K & 40lanes.

I know nothing about that PSU, so can't comment in detail - but this one is a quality unit.

I'd drop the DVD drive unless you have a need for it, it's pretty obsolete in 2016.

I'd look to this. Performance-wise, you'd see no difference - and save at least $700

Well I'll build for a future sli upgrade, so with the 1080 sli taking up 36 lanes and the ssd taking the additional lanes will that work on the motherboard you have suggested?
