With Civilization 6 many of the classic civilization choices are still an option. Russia is no exception. So what is it that is going to make Russia stand out from everyone else this time around?
Russia's Leader.
Peter the Great is going to lead the Russians to victory this time around, and he's going to do it by actually benefitting from not advancing his science with his special ability of 'Grand Embassy'. With this, you will benefit from trading with more advanced civilizations in the form of bonus science and culture. This can be a great boost to allow you to focus on other things, and still keeping somewhat close to the civilizations around you technology wise with some good trade routes.
Unique Unit.
Russia's unique unit is the Cossack, which is going to replace other civilizations cavalry units. These guys have increased attack skills, and the ability to move after they have performed an attack. This gives them the benefit of using some hit and run tactics more effectively than other civilizations may be able to.
Unique Building
The Lavra is a unique building that the Russians can use to utilize their great people. When a great person is expended within a city with this building, it will expand the cities culture border by one tile instantly.
Special Ability
When playing as Russia, they also have the special ability that when they colonize a new city they will be granted additional territory. On top of this, they will receive extra production and faith from any tundra tiles. Suddenly settling in the tundra can actually be a good thing when you're Russia!
When you look at all of this together, it spells out a civilization that can focus on production and expansion, and war when it can benefit from it. Quick expansion and not worrying too much about science is the name of the game here. Let your allies worry about the science, and they'll pass it on to you through trade, you just worry about expanding around the world.
