Make sure you have enough empty space on discs
Open task manager and close any unnecessary processes running in background
Delete all unnecessary applications
Upgrade hardware (RAM, CPU, graphics card, etc.)
Uninstall unnecessary programs (Games, crapware, toolbars, etc.)
Click start>Run.. Type msconfig>enter>Start Up. Uncheck the boxes for the programs that you think you may not use often

Click Start - Run, type in %temp% and then click OK.
Once that temp folder is open and you can view its contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside it.

Best bet for you is to find a friend that knows about computers.
From the sound of things you do know know which files and programs you'd want to keep, you could just end up with an un-usable system if you start removing things.

Stay away from large stores with PC support as the chances of getting a bad tech there are about 95% that will just delete all of you stuff without thinking about it.

Any on-line speed up my PC companies are also useless, as is most software that claims to make your computer faster.
