[SOLVED] Cleaned my laptop keyboard while it was on, now it won't come back on.

I realise this was numbingly stupid. It's an HP Elitebook 850 G3 (daughter's) which I was going to check over with an ultimate view to replacing the HDD with an SSD, and increasing the RAM as it's a sluggish machine.

Turned it on, shut down all the open tabs, found Malwarebytes asking to update so clicked to do this - it's been useful in the past to remove some nasties daughter managed to download - shopping ads that pop up all the time, that sort of stuff.

Left laptop to do this, came back and mindlessly carried out a physical clean of the keyboard, forgetting it was on - wiped it over with a cloth which, of course, meant many keys pressed at random... Closed lid to clean the outside, and on reopening found that the screen was completely blank (black) and wouldn't come on with mouse presses even tho' the laptop was running.

Pressed and held power key to turn it off. Back on and nothing on screen - completely blank, unlit - even tho' keyboard lit up and fan was running. Tried this a couple of times more, and now't. Left it for a few minutes and fired her up again - this time the fan runs very fast, but nothing else happens. Retried, and ditto. Retried once more and now the laptop goes through a repeating cycle of keyboard backlight flickers on for a second, a brief flicker seen on screen, laptop goes chirp (not 'beep'), and it shuts off, comes back on, keyboard light flicker, screen, chirp, off, repeats ad nauseam.

What the 'ell have I done?!

Thanks for any help :-(

Thanks FtG.

Tried that to no avail.

Same as before - backlight comes on and screen flickers (this is brief - for a half-second or so), and it goes off again with the wee chirp. Stays off for around 3 seconds, and repeats.

Lean forward.

No, more than that.

Come on - don't be shy!

MWOA! MWOA!

Clucking bells - it's working. Thank you SO much!

(Taking an age - it's configuring Windows updates... Lawdie - all happening at once.)

Argh... Replaced back cover this morning and fired her up - a repeat of last evening's issue; keyboard backlight and screen give a tiny flicker - a 'pulse' or half-secondish - followed by a faint chirp (HDD?) and she goes off. 3 seconds later, it repeats. Continuously.

Is this a physical fault?

Removed USB dongle (for mouse) and she booted up fine. Inserted dongle, all fine. Shut down, left it for a bit, fired it up again - booted fine with dongle in place.

I don't think the dongle has anything to do with it - most likely just me handling the laptop? Or the laptop just being 'sensitive'...?

What sorts of issues can cause this type of failure to boot up?

Thanks.
