Hello
I wanted to dual boot my PC with windows 7 and 10
I used a bootable USB to install windows 7 on my PC
I had to use diskpart during the installation to change the partition (intended for windos 7) to MBR grom GPT
WHAT I DID WAS ACCIDENTLY CLEANED MY ENTIRE DISK0 (INCLUDES WINDOWS 10 OEM PARTITONS SYSTEM RESERVED ETC)
NOW I HAVE AN EMPTY 500 GB HDD.
Is there anyway I can recover all of it exactly as it is?
thank you

Solution
Yea NEVER EVER use the clean command unless you plan to wipe the whole disk.

and it sounds like you booted the DVD as a Legacy Boot. To install ANYTHING as a uEFI boot which requires GPT when you boot from a device it should list as uEFI Boot DVD Drive or something like that. You want that. Once you do that it will load and install on a GPT Disk.

I can walk you though a few things but you need a Thumb drive and another PC to download some software and burn to the USB drive.

Notice: You are doing this at your own RISK. I can not be held accountable for any possible data loss.

First thing is download Rufus from here

http://ttztools.homeip.net/ISO%20to%20USB%20Tools/

Now download the testdisk file from here...
MRB and GPT is for the WHOLE DISK NOT just a single partition! If the who drive was GPT already it was GPT. If it was MBR before then it was MRB. Changing from one to the other usually requires the disk to be cleaned and wipe and coverted. You can't just clean a partition.

Their are some free partition recovery software like Paragon and EaseUS but you need to 1) either install it on another PC and plug your old hard drive in and do a partition recovery or 2) If they have a bootable Disk you can make off the PC you installed you can boot off of that.

When you do Dual booting it is usually best to have a seperate drive.

Also what was the reason to convert from MBR to GPT?

Also what brand of PC is it? You may have to start all over again.

Sir
Please tell me if there is any way to bring back the data as it was,; it had the entire Windows
I used the following commands>

DISKPART
lisk disk
select disk 0
select partition 5
clean

The PC model is HP pavillion
Processor: AMD A6 QUAD core
RAM 4GB DDR3
I used DISKPART because when i wanted to install windows on one of the partitions of the disk it said it was a GPT partition and that I had to use a non GPT partition (it is the summary of the displayed error)

First thing is download Rufus from here

http://ttztools.homeip.net/ISO%20to%20USB%20Tools/

Now download the testdisk file from here

http://ttztools.homeip.net/Partition%20Recovery/

Now open up Rufus. Select at the top the USB drive you wish to use. Leave everything else alone.

Then go down where it says Create a Bootable Disk using - Make sure FreeDOS is selected. Now click start. Now take the Testdisk file and extract the files directly to the same thumb drive. it should have a folder caled LOCALE and then all the files from the test disk.

Now boot off of that.

Once you start it it will just give you a C:\

Type in Testdisk and then press enter

Test disk will start up. it will ask about logs and just hit enter.

Then it will list your disk. select your disk and press enter (Will say something like 500 GB / and then a GB number in free space)

Now select it and press enter.

Next screen shows what partition table it was. Now we need to select EFI GPT since that is what the disk was and press enter

now select analyse and enter and then enter again as quick search is selected at the bottom.

Now the next part will take some time.

Once it is done it should fine the partitions. At this point here is when you could overwrite anything that might be on there. So press enter and then press enter again. Then the next screen at the bottom it has the option to write. use the arrows to select write and then press enter and then Y to confirm.

If it DIDN"T find all the partitions that were on their before do NOT write it! Select the Deeper Scan and see if it finds it on that scan.

If it doesn't find the all the partitions then we will have to try other software. DO NO WRITE unless you are SURE it has found ALL the partitions!

if it finds them all, and you click write, you should be able to just hit CTRL+ALT+DELETE and restart and it SHOULD boot up as it once was.

then we can move forward on how to properly dual boot.

Solution

I am doing an in Depth analyse .. hope it works!
THank you Sir

Use this thread as i do not check my PM's are they are usually just filled with PM"s about my post being the solution all the time XD

And how old is the windows image backup, and with what software?

Also did you do a quick scan at first or no? Doing just a Clean or Deleting of partitions a Quick Scan should have worked fine

I took the backup a week before I ruined my life :'). I used the regular windows backup tool from control panel.

I did a quick scan but it didnt find all my partitions so I now I am doing an in depth scan (80%)

Ok let that go and see.

and the windows backup is only for files really. It isn't a true system image or backup that can restore everything as it was. You won't get the recovery partition or programs back just your files. I never use the built in windows backup. if you want a true image back you need a cloning or imaging software like Macrium Reflect.

I executed the write command ,it said i'd have to restart for changes to take effect ;but still no luck.
I contacted the windows tech support, they asked me to do a clean installation of windows, and then restore this backup.
What do you recommend sir?
