Cleaning up computer

Hey guys
So my parents are using a pretty old laptop running Windows XP with a AMD Sempron processor.
I was wondering if you guys could recommend some good Antivirus (plus anything you would add with the AV for the computer), and especially would love if you guys could recommend some good cleaning utilities for the computer to help it speed it up and bit.

The best way to speed up XP is to do a clean reinstall periodically.

Otherwise, I would go through the programs, services, and processes looking for junk to delete. Ccleaner is a good general cleaner for temp files and caches, I use MS Security Essentials as an AV, but the best cleanup is to just look and see what crap got installed with updates over time.
