I ain't gonna quote your whole message, brother, but It seems to me that GW's suggestion to remove my sticky which detailed all possible answers to the questions you ask was... ughmmm. wrong. Search this forum for my original post entitled "Enhancing System Performance"

Cheers.

Will do! Like I said before, I'm already doing most, (now all..) of the earlier suggestions, but I'm always looking for some more tweaks/optimizations.

It was my brand new R9600P against his recently acquired R9500P (up from the R8500LE IIRC).

Here's the thread (I posted it as 'ShowAll' because I think it reads better without the interuptions 😎 (look at all the 'n00b' titleholders back then :lol: ;

(miss alot of them old regulars)

As for Aperture size it does depend on the game too. Some are more influenced, some are not. There's not fast and set rule for all cards all situations, but for a n00b I'd point him to Rojak's guide which was my initial starting point;

No no, my current install is at least 4 months old.

And, check the sig! I've made quite a bit of progress!

11,500 3dMark03 bungholiomarks! I'm pretty damn close to where I should be now, especially since I'm running this poor, old AthlonXP rig.

Sorry I posted that funny...I meant that...if you tried that extra hd (to see if you'd get a better score), that it wouldn't give you a better score...just to spite me. Heh.

Well, that's cool that you got it goin. Was it a driver issue finally that brought it up that last 1500 pts or so? The reason i ask, is last night, the guy that i quoted the 6800 gt off of with the P4 3000, screwed around a little bit, uninstalled and reinstalled the new drivers from nvidia...poof, he now is scoring much better. 11452 6800GT 3000 P4. He also topped out my best 05 score...b@stard...That's ok tho, i haven't oc'd my gpu yet. His came oc'd.

My own damn fault...

I had my memory timings set to "agressive" in the bios a few weeks ago... my system never crashes so It didn't occur to me that the memory couldn't handle the timings.

I changed them back to "optimal", and the score went right up to 11,500 consistantly.

The weakest link in my system is my $hitty, generic RAM. Maybe I should throw more volts at it, I don't know. Dual-channel is right out of the question with this crap. Not sure if it's worth getting better stuff until I migrate platforms though...

Dang...uh, if you were considering upgrading to a 64 system in the next 3/4 year or so, i'd would have recommended you go out and pick up the $124 2x512 cl2 3200 HyperX i found last week on outpost.

Damn that's a good price.

At this point, I'm not sure what my uipgrade path will be, unfortunately. System's running very nicely, hard to imagine something it couldn't handle in the near future as far as gaming goes.

I've heard (haven't actually done it) that you can sorta import msconfig in to 2000 tho.
yea just Google for "msconfig win2000" and youll get a few sites where you can download the file. you drop it in either c:\windows or one of the folders under there. win2000 is almost identical to xp so peopel may have just copied the msconfig.exe file from xp

You've had similar or better scores over the last couple of cards over extended periods of time? That's a rarity...i've seen significant drops just going to a newer driver (not because of an improper installation either...).
usually I get worse performance over time with a particular installation of windows (theres nothing like a fresh installation, nice and zippy), sometimes it works well for months.. what I have the most problem with is hard drive accessing. When I first install windows, say for example if I want to just open Windows Explorer to to browse the folders on my drive, theres only a few milliseconds of hard drive reading to do so when I first open it. Same thing if you open the control panel, display properties, or the start menu. BUT after a month or to, I dont know why (everything else usually stays fine) but everything takes about twice as long to open. Windows Explorer takes a full second, and advanced display properties takes about 2 seconds to open . just annoys me because I cant understand why THOSE thigns would slow down over time.

Work sucks.

I kinda had to anyway, just couldn't resist!
As they say "A good long thread should never die"... who ever 'they' are.

LOL, you Ba$$turd!

I was reading the thread, and said; "WTF, Cleeve got a GF6800U again after the X1800!?!" Wonder what happened to the X1800, musta blown-up!

Then I notice that I'd replied in the thread, didn't remember that, then noticed the dates. JackA$$!

I went back to that old thread between me and GW and dang all the titles from back then are updated.

It was so interesting seeing the posts from when Cleeve, GW, Phial, Me, and so many others were like journeymen, etc. Now it's all our current titles, what a bummer I thought that was kinda neat last time we looked back!

Anything that runs in he background and eats CPU cycles & memory when it's not in use. is a TSR.
Just like all the crap that HP, Dell, etc. install on your "new" computer which makes it take forever for to boot. After I reinstalled XP on my former HP machine, my 3DMark05 score went from 1,300 to 2,200. Once my A64 and DFI board come, I'm hoping to get that score to 3,000, making it the highest score for an X600.

How long has it been since you wiped and reloaded your OS. No matter how well you take care of your os, it does become cluttered.
I respectfully disagree. My last two videocards got the same or better marks in 3dMark from the day of install to the day of removal, over six months on each. After I installed my 9700 PRO in an 11-month old install of XP, I still made the top 10% of 3dMark scores for my card/platform.

TSR is an old-school acronym for Terminate and Stay Resident programs. Anything that runs in he background and eats CPU cycles & memory when it's not in use. is a TSR.

Press cntrl/alt/del to open your task manager and see what processes are running. It's worth it to search google and find out what they are if you're not sure.

The msconfig utility (Start button>run>type "msconfig">hit enter) is a good place to see what is lauched on startup.

Agreed. Windows 9X would clutter with time, and although XP can clutter after adding apps removing apps, then adding and removing again--it clutters at a very slow rate. Also, with a little knowledge of the Windows registry, the clutter is fixable.

LOL, that's the same PC my dad's been looking at (and he's a former IBMer!)

Personally I want he inverse of what Apple's offering, not XP on a Mac, but OSX on a build your own or Top End laptop.

For the most part the MACs with the features I want are too expensive for what you get but the OS is great. But of course Apple needs the OS to sell alot of their rigs.

Don't get me wrong their are solid, and can occasionally be had for a good price (my sister for her powerbook for 40% off, very nice rig despite the same crappy FX5200GO I had), but I prefer the individual options of 30-50 different laptop makers, and infinite possibilities of build-you-own.

I think that Apple is missing their opportunity to dethrone M$ just when they are weakest (Vista Delay and confusion).

I'd dual boot OSX and XP, but not on an apple, at least not right now, maybe if they make a merom based one with an X1700 that doesn't cost as much a new motorcycle then I'll consider them again (I've been a mac user before and used them at work too).

GET A MAC! /subliminal message

Having great hardware is a plus on the PC side, but give Windows XP 6 months and a dualcore SLi rig will run like a slug, unless you choose to not install any programs other than games and graphics drivers.

Apple is in a great position to gain some market share right now without having to release OSX for PC. Despite what many PC diehard fans say, a Mac today is no longer the Mac that claims their G5 processor are the bestest in the world. Apple has made competitive products in terms of performance and they are damn sexy!
