I cloned the HD of a Dell Inspiron i3847 (Windows 7) to a Samsung 850 EVO SSD and while the computer booted up, about half the time, the USB ports + WIFI + audio would be dead (but monitor would always show the desktop), forcing me to do hard shutdown. I updated the drivers to USB, peripherals, checked BIOS, unplugged all and devices and replugged them back in but this persisted. I changed back to the original hard drive and I can use everything on the first boot so it looks like there won't be a SSD in this system but would anyone have any idea why this would be happening? Is there something in this computer I should watch out for?

The seemingly obvious answer is that the disk-cloning (data migration) operation went awry for one reason or another. Have you considered that?

I assume you used Samsung's Data Migration program for the disk-cloning? Did you attempt repeating the disk-cloning operation? Same results?

You checked the connection of the SSD to the motherboard's SATA connector? Looks OK?

Have you checked out the health of the SSD with Samsung's Magician software?

Since, as you've indicated, the installed HDD functions without any problems and presuming that you're not dealing with a defective SSD, there's no reason why the latter shouldn't be a part of your computer "life".

I repeated the cloning (using Macrium the second time around) with same result & all the connections were not loose. I changed out the battery, even though computer is less than a year old. When the computer booted okay, Magician software indicated all was good. I also cloned to a OCZ ARC to see if the result would be any different & the same problem of USB ports, WIFI & audio not working showed up on the 3rd boot.

Really strange.
When you boot to the SSD and access Device Manager does DM reflect problems with USB controllers, network adapters, and sound controllers?
And no similar problems indicated by DM when you boot to your HDD?

So when the problems manifest themselves using the SSD as the boot drive - the system does not detect any USB device connected to any of the laptop's USB ports? And no Wi-Fi capability at all? And no sound?
But everything works as it should when you boot to your HDD, right?

After you clone the SSD have you connected it to the same SATA connector that the HDD previously was connected to? But the problem persists?

Have you discussed this problem with Dell tech support? Any help there?

Do you happen to have another drive (HDD or SSD) that you could clone just for testing purposes?

When you cloned the contents of the HDD to the Samsung SSD I assume the SSD was connected as a USB device, yes? (Your laptop doesn't by any chance have two HDD bays, does it?). Did you use one of those SATA-to-USB adapters to effect the disk-cloning operation? I mention that because we've found these device generally unsatisfactory and don't use them any more. Much prefer a generic USB enclosure or docking station.

(As you can probably tell, I'm trying to think of every possible reason for this unusual problem. At least unusual to me!)

When the SSD boot was fine, DM showed no problems with the USB ports, WIFI adapters, audio, but I updated the drivers anyway. When the SSD booted but the USB ports, WIFI adapters & audio were dead, I really could not go into DM since I don't have ps/2 mouse/keyboard. During these boots, unplugging the mouse from USB port and replugging into a different port did not make a difference so I would do a hard shutdown and try booting up again after waiting a few minutes. All of the connections to the SSD were the original cables to the HDD. HDD booting does not have this problem at all, which is why I am concerned.

This computer is a desktop & when this happened, I put the original HDD and did a clean install using the system recovery disks. (I tried using the system recovery disks to do an install directly to the SSD but it said the drive was too small, SSD = 120 GB, HDD = 1 TB). So the second time around, I cloned using Macrium instead of the Samsung software and the first few boots were okay, but then the same problem of dead USB ports + WIFI adapter + audio popped up just as I thought the problem was solved.

I have not contacted Dell as the computer is off warranty ( just a 1 year warranty) & the original Dell parts work so I thought they would not really help me upgrade to SSD. I tried buying the recovery media online but since it is off warranty, I apparently can buy them.

I did use a SATA-to-USB adapters for the cloning so maybe that was the problem? I sent in the SSD back to retailer because I thought I got a defective SSD & I guess I will try and use docking station for the replacement SSD cloning.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Perform a clean OS installation and see how that goes. (also check that you have no data to backup on the storage device), before doing the OS installation.
Of course, you will have missing drivers after the installation, so you will need to download them from the hardware manufacture's website (from Dell's, in your case).

Hmmm... reattaching the DVD drive *or* the old hard drive seems to allow me to boot. Maybe it's something related to how the devices are scanned either in BIOs or Windows. I'm definitely booting off the SSD as the system comes up fine without the original hard drive and just the SSD.
