Question Image freeze at high loads ?

Hello,

I recently discovered a strange problem on my computer.

When I play games or run other programs which put high load on CPU and GPU simultaneously, the monitor turns black after a longer period of time, mostly one hour after the game is started. If this happens, I can even do "blind" restarts using the keyboard or mouse (if I can find the buttons to click without seeing them) or other usage but the system.

When I restart right after the screen turning black the PC shows me the BIOS screen and the bootanimation of my OS, but when it should switch to the graphical environment of my desktop the screen again turns black immediately. If I wait a few minutes before doing the blind reboot everythink works as normal again. But then the problem occurs after a much shorter period of time again (after 5 to 15 minutes) with the same symptoms. It also occurs when resetting all OC settings.

I have an Intel Core i7-4790K, an AMD RX-5700 XT and an MSI Z87 XPOWER Mainboard.

What could be the problem? Renewing all thermal paste and pads in all components, even the chipset and VRMs itself didn't solve the problem. No showable temperature goes beyond 60°C at any time. What could be the problem or the solution for it?

Thanks in advance,
Oebbler

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

I have an Intel Core i7-4790K, an AMD RX-5700 XT and an MSI Z87 XPOWER Mainboard.
When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

Try and use DDU to remove all GPU drivers(Intel, Nvidia and AMD) in Safe Mode, then manually install the latest GPU driver sourced from AMD's support site in an elevated command, i.e, Right click installer>Run as Administrator.

If I wait a few minutes before doing the blind reboot everythink works as normal again. But then the problem occurs after a much shorter period of time again (after 5 to 15 minutes) with the same symptoms. It also occurs when resetting all OC settings.
Could be an indication of your PSU being faulty/failing.

Moved thread from Components section to Systems section.

My system consists of:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K
CPU cooler: Noctua NH-D15 with ThermalGrizzly Conductonaut
Motherboard: MSI Z87 XPOWER
Ram: Kingston DataValue 1333 MHz 9/9/9/24
SSD/HDD: Samsung SM883
GPU: MSI RX-5700 XT MECH OC
PSU: SilverStone SFX-800
Chassis: CoolerMaster Silencio 450
OS: Debian 12 and Windows 7 (Dual Boot via GRUB2)
Monitor: BenQ GL 2470

My PSU draws at most 200 W from the power plug and delivers 11.9 Volts at its 12V-rail. When measuring with an oscilloscope at one unplugged PCIe power plug there is a voltage drop of 0.003 volts when changing immediately from idle to full load.

A reinstallation of the driver and even of the whole OS does not change the behavior of my PC. The problem occurs on Windows and Linux the same way. Do you have some other ideas what could cause the problem?
