I'm building a new system into a fairly old mid-tower (10+ years). While there is enough room for the Hyper 212 in the case's width, reading about installation has me worried about clearance in back of the motherboard.

My case doesn't have a mobo tray, just stand-offs from the back to the mobo. The mounting backplate on the CM looks fairly thick.

I've already got enough misgivings about this hsf as it is. There's talk of the fans being noisy and excessive torque applied to the mobo. I'm looking for some reassurance it'll at least fit and not short the mobo against the back of the case or something.

Proposed system:
Antec PerformancePlus (I told you it was old)
5 - 80mm fans with fan controller in 5.25" bay
Asus M5A99X EVO 2.0 (what is it with EVO tacked on to everything?)
AMD FX-8320
...I guess the rest is pretty much unimportant.

Solution
The bracket is like 1/8 in thick tops. It's meant to go between the motherboard and case. I would be more concerned about the heatsink side of the CPU cooler - it's pretty big.

I have a CM 212 EVO installed on my 3570k. If the interior of your case is OK, you should be fine. You also need to be considering RAM clearance.
I'm not going to try to say that it will fit or not in that regard... I don't want to give bad information. You will have to either take measurements or google around the forums to see if people had any problems with your case/ram/motherboard.

Not through the SIDE of the case like you can see it from the outside, but it does mound directly to the case on the inside which is a completely flat surface (no cutouts or anything to make room behind the CPU or anything). There is no removable tray.

Also to clarify, the case was either a Plus880 or Plus860 http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/plus880/
I don't remember which, but the only difference was the PSU which has since been replaced by a 600 Watt jobber.

I did research ahead of time. There should be clearance in the case on top and the motherboard may have the first of 4 RAM slots blocked.
Many have said you can either slide the fan higher if you need all four slots (which I don't) or use it in a pull configuration.

I assume if the mounting bracket actually touches the back of the case it isn't going to short anything.

The bracket comes with a static guard
