Code 28 on all USB devices

Lenovo Y500 running Windows 8. I was getting the Code 28 error on USB Controller, but after installing a ton of Windows updates that seems to be fixed.

Now I hear the device plugin/unplug sound, but the devices (wireless mouse and external hard drive) aren't recognized. I tried to have Windows search for the drivers in device manager, but it couldn't find them. The hard drive is visible in Disk Management, but it is impossible for me to assign a drive letter to it.

Both devices work in other computers without problems. What am I doing wrong?

Sounds like you have a hardware issue with the USB ports. Errors, then nothing works on them. Try booting off a Linux Live CD, see if the USB ports work then.
