Question Code 43 and Nvidia Control Panel not opening

Hi everybody

I am running a Dell M3800 precision laptop with an Nvidia Quadro K1100M gpu, currently with Windows 10 Pro (10.0.19041), and have had it since 2015 without any problems. I use it mainly for cad, 3d modelling and some rendering (Autocad, Rhino, Grasshopper, V-ray, Revit, Adobe CS).

The past few months I have had to use it a lot more than I used to because I was working from home and at some point I realised my modelling software wasn't using the Nvidia card but the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 card. In the device manager, the Nvidia card showed a code 43 error and I couldn't access the Nvidia control panel from the desktop.

I have exchanged quite a bit with Nvidia tech support (who have been super responsive and helpful btw) but unfortunately nothing has worked. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest Nvidia drivers, I reinstalled the latest bios and chipset drivers from dell website, I have tried creating a new user account and installing it on there, I have installed several different Nvidia drivers, and run an SFC test, and I still can’t get the card to work properly.

The last driver I have installed is the 426.78 dch whql. The code 43 went away in the device manager (it indicated that the Quadro card was working correctly) but there was no Nvidia control panel when right clicking on the desktop. In C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\ but there wasn’t any Control Panel Client folder. I went to Microsoft page to get the Nvidia control panel app but when running the app as admin nothing happened. I restarted my computer, and when it turned back on, there was still no Nvidia control panel when right clicking on the desktop and when I went back to the device manager, the Quadro was giving me the code 43 error again. (FYI by simply deactivating and then reactivating the device in the device manager the code 43 goes away, but still no access to the control panel).

At this point I am running out of ideas. Would there be any point in reformatting my computer? Is it possible that this is a hardware issue with the card, and if so are there any cards I could purchase to replace it?

I am trying to get in touch with dell to diagnose the issue in the meantime but as the computer is no longer under warranty it hasn't been simple to get their input.

Many thanks in advance.

it is possible that your card has an issue, however....
Nvidia have had to split the control panel from their drivers due to microsoft, and the microsoft store is broken if you try to download the control panel that way.

You need to use this link below (advanced driver search) to select your card to get the latest driver,

When you get to the windows driver type box - make sure to select STANDARD, dont use the DCH driver,
when you download and install and then reboot,
the control panel will be back.

Thanks for the reply. I have been getting all my drivers from the advanced driver search page, but hopefully this latest driver will work.
I am downloading the latest driver (R390 U15 (392.62) WHQ from the 30.09.2020) and will give it a shot.

I should uninstall all current drivers and remove all Nvidia files before installing this, right?
Do you have a preferred method to make a clean driver install?

No it should just overwrite the existing one.

You only need to remove old drivers if you change Graphics cards or if you change from nvida to amd

I only use CCleaner to remove the old files,
but i make sure ive downloaded the new driver i need, and put it on the desktop ready to install

Just installed it. The "Nview Desktop Manager" is back when right clicking on the desktop, but nothing happens when I click it.
I went to C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Control Panel Client and ran nvcplui.exe as admin, but again nothing happens.

Im not sure what that is, might be a Quattro graphics card application. Have a search on google about it,
or someone here on the forums might know about it if you make a new thread.

Down near the clock (bottom right, might be hidden in the arrow extras) you should have Nvidia geforce experiance, right click that should get you the control panel,

I wonder if the Quattro cards have something differnt to the control panel,
its not something i have knowledge about.

Try option 5 on this website - https://silicophilic.com/nvidia-control-panel-missing/
You just did option 4 and it didnt work so try option 5.

Below option 5 is the install control panel which is the broken part of the microsoft store i was saying above, so ignore that.

Edit: - did you reboot the system after installing, that sometimes fixes it.

Yeah, I rebooted my system after installing the latest driver.

I just went through option 4 in your link, unfortunately no new icon has appeared in the toolbar after restart, nothing happened after trying to run it as admin, and still nothing happens when trying to run nvcplui.exe .

I did notice that I am getting a code 43 again in my device manager after each reboot (which I wasn't getting anymore with the 426.78 driver). By simply deactivating and reactivating the driver the code 43 goes away and it says it is working correctly, but that still seems strange.

I also noticed that in the properties of the NVDisplay.Container.exe file I copied to the startup folder, that its compatibility mode only goes up to Windows 8. That box isn't checked ("Run this program in compatibility mode for...") but I thought it might be odd. I also found it strange when right clicking on the exe file, I have the option to "solve compatibility issues".

I am running through what that might lead me to now.

Yeah, that's kind of what I have already gone through with Nvidia tech support. Would installing a previous version of Windows maybe solve this? I didn't realise when the card stopped working, but it might coincide with when I updated to Windows 10...

Other thing I have been considering is to reformat my computer, but I would really prefer to avoid that.

I guess I was kind of hoping someone might have encountered this same problem and found a solution.

I would do two things,
Either,
take to a computer repair shop to have them look at it - as you said the Graphics card is not working properly,
or
Start looking at shopping for a new laptop

Yes, but you will always have that annoyance at the back of your mind,
Pop it into a repair shop, have them examine it,
either it will be a quick cheapish fix
or
if its expensive to fix/terminal issue,
then you know can start saving for a new one
