Combat Evolved, poor performance on high-spec PC

AMD64 3200, 768MB, ATI 9800 Pro. Framerate is frequently below 30FPS,
regardless of sync setting. Yes, I've read the bit about only using high
quality textures and no anti-aliasing, and have complied. Audio settings
have little effect (more on that later). And yet looking at the game I can't
see that there are any particularly sophisticated techniques being used - it
all looks rather 1990's to me - low polygon count and low resolution
textures, with few special effects. Is it supposed to look like this (or
does it look like this for everyone)? I'd point to a screendump but I've yet
to figure out how to do that.

As far as audio goes... actually I'll save that for another post.

Same experience here, Mel. I just finished Half Life 2, a more visually
detailled game IMHO, and it ran much better.

I perhaps spoke too soon - later in the game the graphics detail does appear
to improve dramatically. Currently I'm in an outdoor scene - a beach - and
it's quite well done. I am having to run in a low resolution though, and of
course with AA off. I think that the one thing I did to dramatically improve
performance was to disable specular effects.

There's a performance FAQ at
http://www.bungie.net/Games/HaloPC/page.aspx?section=FAQInfo&subsection=Support&page=techperfFAQ
though there isn't much to tinker with.
