Hello all, I have been having trouble playing Command & Conquer Generals on my computer since day one. I don't believe the lag is due to any graphics issues because I still get the slowdown in game play even if I have all the settings on Low. The lag gets progressively worse as I play for a longer amount of time. (skirmishes single player) Almost to the point where the game is not playable.

I have contacted EA about this repeatedly but they send the whole copy and paste update your sound/video drivers drivers and defrag your system response. Even though I repeatedly tell them that everything is up to date. I assure you my system is in top notch shape. I don't have any other problems running other games.

System Specs:
Windows XP Pro SP2
MOBO: ASUS P4S533
CPU: P4 2.8ghz / 533
1GB PC2700 Ram
VIDEO: BFG 6600GT OC AGP x4/x8 (running at 4x due to mobo support)

As you can see I don't have anything thats blazingly fast but its well over the recommended specs of the game. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or know if there are any known issues with my hardware and this game? I am beginning to think it has something to do with hardware conflicts. I have mentioned this to EA countless times but they either ignore my question or state that there are no known issues. help? 🙁

I would suggest it is a processor issue, its not like yours is too small, but RTS games AI is heavily reliant on the CPU, you should try playing a skirmish against the computer with just one opponent to see if thats the case.

I remember years ago when I got this game (the game that turned me off RTS gaming for years to come). I had an Athlon XP 1700+ and I think 1GB or ram at that time, the game gave me this problem too. But to an extent that it would slow down even in the single players campaign. It is a problem with system resources and it looks to me that you might not have enough memory but to tell you the truth it is more likely that your CPU is not fast enough.

This is a known issue with C&C Generals engine--no matter what PC you have you'll experience a slow-down once a certain number of units are on the map.

Doesn't matter if you have an old Athlon XP 1700 or a new Intel Quad-Core.

The same happened from the original C&C Red alert.... In Tiberian Sun, if it was slowing down, i'd place the camera on spots of the map I couldn't see (it always returned to normal speed doing so), but it could all be some other problem :?

And Tiberian Sun had the same impact on my P2 400 Mhz and my P4 3.2 Mhz lol, weird.

I know Red Alert 2 also was plagued by this problem, but I did find a solution! *GASP*, run dxdiag and disable d3d and direct draw acceleration. Obviously not an option for generals, but I've never tried it for Tiberiun Sun.

Don't forget to enable those settings back before playing any other game!

Alright well I decided to reinstall and give it another go. Game play was acceptable with one army at the hard difficulty setting. (not brutal). Kinda crummy if you ask me. Its too easy playing with just one army 😀

Looks like its the AI thats giving me troubles with the lag. The CPU cant handle it. Maybe the up coming generals will be better.
