I run the dhclient command in Backtrack 5R3 and it seems like it times out and then says No database found - sleeping. I have my internet password protected through wifi but I am using a hard connection on my host CPU. Any thoughts?

Solution
Yes that is the message. I have looked on Google and if I found the answer I wouldnt be posting here lol. I found alot about wan0 interface but nothing about running it in a VM and how to add my password. Hell I dont know if I have to bypass my own firewall to get out from the VM or not either.

Ok does anyone have the answer or not? I know its called Kali, it was backtrack and thats what I have. I know Offensive Security is the company that designed it and that a Linux forum could help too. I thought this was a decent site for help questions, guess I was wrong. All I have gotten was suggestions to google it and look somewhere else. So please if you dont have an answer or at least some sort of input thats useful dont bother replying.

Because Backtrack/Kali is a specialized (entirely custom software stack including kernel and patched drivers, core utilities etc..) distribution built for security professionals not many people will want help troubleshoot basic Linux questions because the idea is that you should already have a intimate knowledge of Linux if you use Backtrack/Kali.

BTW I only mentioned earlier because backtrack 5rc3 is really old and maybe it is a bug that is fixed in current Kali Linux. You should try current version of Kali, and if still doesn't work ask in their forum as you will receive better help.

I get that it is specialized and I can do this no problem from another computer but my home PC that I am trying to use it will not let me. I dont know if its because imm running this one through a VM or if its because I am not correctly formatting the terminal command. Either way I guess Ill figure it out on my own. Thanks

I'm sorry that you resent my suggestion that you try the solutions given in the many Google hits on this error. To be fair, you gave the wrong error message and did not tell us that you had already tried all these suggested solutions. I'm even unclear now as to whether you are running a wired or a wireless network connection, which version of Linux you are using, and how you have your network adapter configured in the VM.

I think you are right to say that it's best if you figure it out on your own; at least you know the details of your setup and what you have already tried.
