They would have to compete against evercade if they did that, and the question then is always why compete if you can offer them that they can make a replica c64 case for their evercade and slap an official commodere and c64 logo on the case and cartridges.This is the main crux.
If they can get the license rights and original ROMs for a couple hundred-plus original games they will really be able to make something special here. I just hope they don't get greedy.
If they are able to produce a mini C64 (pixel perfect display and functionality, of course) with cartridge-style sets of games, and try not to break the bank of those interested, they may able to carve out a nice niche of customers.
We'll need cartridges that have 20+ games on each. No single game cartridge will work here - even if it's only $19.99. Give me 20 games (with at least 4-5 very popular games on each cartridge) for $29.99 and I’ll pick it up.
At least it looks like they’re forming a good team. As long as they focus on the preservations of the Commodore 64 legacy and its original games, ahead of making a huge profit, we should be good.
No initial design cost, no initial production cost, no risk for them at all, and a good opportunity for evercade as well.
