“The way we see it, everyone should have the right to be a part of the bleeding edge technology....."

So you're lying to customers charging them for it then not giving it to them and pocketing the cash..... yes, very noble, way to look out for the consumer!

You let "God" dictate what movie media you use? Grats sheople, welcome to the Jobstopia. I kid, but not really.

But then again, this ISN'T VHS->DVD. Rewinding < Not rewinding. Chapter Skip > No chapter skip. Then there's the longevity and the quality of DVDs.

But BluRay is different. Aside from quality and a less-difficult-to-scratch disc, there really isn't much difference, so it's obvious that the sell is harder, especially when people have the perception it's hard to tell the difference between standard and HD. I will concede that I can only tell the difference between 720p and 1080i/p if it's pointed out to me and I look REAL hard, but comparing SD to HD is like comparing a beautiful Gala apple to a rotten apple with a worm in it.

I use my BRDVDs as much as i can, price permitting. But the "bag of hurt" comes in the same realm of DVDs did, just with a slower adoption rate. The quality in movies, and the some of the features make BRDVDs great media, but the slow adoption rate has lead to a slow maturity rate and therefor inhibitive pricing.

To me, BRDVDs just need time. They are the future and they are truly worth the time. It's just a matter of adoption. And until Apple joins on the bandwagon, I get the feeling that the Sheople such as our Stevetheist here, won't adopt at any increased rate like DVD.

Sorry guys, this was an April Fool's joke. Not serious (or true) at all. Purely satirical.

you had me until the steve jobs = god reference. Otherwise belieavable, I have bought a blu-ray movie that was just an upconvert of a standard def movie I swear. And i would not be surprised at all if this was really happening.

Good one,
Very believable.

Just when you think the site is getting better. OMG I can't believe you guys think Steve Jobs is God! Krappy news as usual. Every article just keeps getting worse.

-Bounty
(p.s. better pay attention today)

April Fool!

@Blood Raven-Factory, not retail store....they may sell them out front in separate places, who knows..but of course someones dad will go and get one of both you know XD

It's hardly laughable when you see the number of people not perceptive enough to get the joke... else it's even worse that most of them might be "funny" "trolls" to stick the April's fools theme back at Toms 😀 Anyway - scary sh*t when you think about it. It really might be happening 😀

And I thought using names like "Joe King" and "Terry Bull" would make it obvious enough. Oh well!

Jane - you made a huge mistake.. Not in article, but in comments! You never tell it's a joke THIS EARLY! 😀

I knew it was, but once I started reading comments I've noticed how belivable it actualy was to many people. You should have carried on at least for a first 50 comments.. or first page of comments, so others that read it don't get it right away 😀

Anyway, nice story, and good thinking about offering such a small news as a joke.. 😉

I still don't get how people believe this story or do NOT question it from their own knowledge of basic consumer electronics. I thought the people who would read Tom's would think just as I did...Regular DVD's do NOT work in a Blue Ray DVD player! Hello, that was part of HD-DVD's draw and their marketing! Where is the "common sense"?

Good luck shoving those plain DVD's into your PS3's!

Not to mention, I had no idea so many people did not read previous comments and just scrolled to the bottom to submit their own! I at least try to read the comments so I know what the chatter is about unless it's like 5 or 6 pages worth! =)

[citation][nom]thegh0st[/nom]I didn't really believe the story but I wasn't thinking April Fools for sure. I mean uh hello - regular DVD's do not work in Blue Ray DVD players last I checked. And what granny or technically challenged person wouldn't figure that out way before 8 months. Not to mention, where the heck would they get a ton of empty Blue Ray DVD cases that exactly matched what they needed. Plus as someone else said - helping? Uh? That made no sense! =)[/citation]
Regular DVDs do work in Blu-ray Disc players.

In fact, there isn't a Blu-ray player on the market right now that doesn't play DVDs. Sometimes the point of playing a DVD in a Blu-ray player is so that the hardware will upscale the image to better fit an HDTV's resolution. While this won't add any additional detail, it could produce a slightly better image than if left up to the TV's scaler.

Be sure to check out Google's CADIE as well! Its a "new artificial intelligence system." Its on the homepage at the moment.

Its not their best, but its pretty good. The TISP was the best.

The good thing about this April Fool's joke, is that it could really happen. It's the kind of thing people these days would actually do.

However, a couple points to make here. Cinderella (one of the movies mentioned) belongs to Disney. Disney would have had an epic tantrum if someone else sold the movie... let alone as a scam.

Terry Bull (terrible) and Joe King (joking). They say it all! :) Maybe they can get a write-up here after THG switches over to the all-Mac format. 😉

well if they do work in Blue Ray DVD players now that's news to me. I've never really been interested in a Blue Ray device but last I had heard that weren't backwards compatible like that and I remember HD-DVD marketing that as a fault of Blue Ray. also I remember them touting how they could make one side of a HD-DVD the regular format and the other side HD format.

Guess I learned my thing for today!

while the director claims the scam was an endeavor to bring high quality entertainment to those who could not necessarily afford Blu-ray movies

Yup, I'm dense - I didn't catch on until I read this. Then a fluorescent bulb finally flickered to life above my head and I saw the light.

I'll agree they fessed up far too soon - imagine the flame war we could of seen! (Not only between SD vs HD, but joke vs non-joke.)

@bounty - you tell them to pay attention and intentionally misspell Crappy, but they still didn't get it. Too bad you had to beat them over the head with your funny-stick. *sigh* US TV and movies have made people so lazy, they want everything spoon fed to them.

@everyone else - hey, I can definitely tell the difference between my DVD and BD porn... porn should never ever be in HD! *shudder*
