Compaq mini display only shows left half of screen

On boot, the laptop will show the whole screen, then the right half will fizzle out. Upon turning the screen off and back on, it shows the whole screen for about 1 second, then reverts to the half status. Does anyone know whats wrong/what needs to be replaced? Thanks in advance.

My first guess would be that the backlight for that half of the screen is cutting off for some reason. I have a similar problem on my older LG LCD where the left half lights up properly but the right half takes a while to warm up and stay lit properly... not sure if that's a CCFL or inverter problem.

it doesn't seem to be warming up, as the screen will turn on, but only for a short time.
