Comparison between old Pentium 4 to Dual Core processor.

Hello,

I currently own a 6 year old desktop PC running on XP which has an Intel Pentium 4 (530) HT Prescott 3.00ghz processor. 1 core, 2 threads.

I am currently looking at buying (additionally) a laptop: the Acer 4810 Intel Dual Core SU4100 1.3ghz running Windows 7.

My question is: in what areas would I notice a difference between the two? How does the Pentium 4 (530) compare against the Dual Core SU4100? How will the drop from 3.0 to 1.3 ghz manifest itself?

If anyone can give me some real-world answers I'd be hugely grateful.

the dual core is way faster

the comparison goes like this

the P4: 6+6+6+6+6+6+6= 42

Dual core: 6*7=42

so really the dual core is smarter and more efficient than the P4 and therefore faster

single thread performance will remain the same, if not increased.

however, since a lot of app today do use 2cores u will see a noticable improvement in performance

The dual core will allow you to take advatage of double threaded apps more so than the p4. I upgraded (Just two days ago) my P4 3.2 Ghz HT to a Pentium D 945 3.4 Ghz and have seen a HUGE increase in perfomace... So to give you and example (The differences would be about the same-maybe a little less or more... Im not really good with laptop CPU's, so correct me if im wrong...)

In Dirt 2 Demo (Demo becuase im a poor student 😛) I was getting 20-25 FPS (Medium-Low settings), then with the new CPU, it went to 30 FPS with the settings maxed out (2X AA).

Start up speed was cut in half and shut down was 3/4 of the P4.

Windows Experience went from a 4.1 to a 5.1.

And you have Windows XP, which 'gunks up', and that 'gunk' slows the computer down. A new OS with a new computer with a faster proc would make the P4 look like a Vett to a Porshe .

The P4 3GHz gets about 460 on CPU Passmark benchmark and the SU4100 1.3ghz gets about 990. You should see twice the perforamce in most applications.
