Hello, I'm working on a new build with the i5-3550, and have a couple of options available for mobos:

One option is a B75 chipset
The other features a z77 chipset

Not really sure of the differences, I'm targeting a <$1000 build with no plans to OC. I'll be using the system mostly for gaming.

■Z77 is way latest version for 2nd gen intel CPU chipset compare to B75. Z77 also compatible n ready for your Ivy Bridge and should support above 2200MHz DIMM speed. i myself had a problem in reaching 1600MHz for my dual channel corsair 8GB, 1600MHz RAM. when the B75 only support only to 1333MHz memory speed. where the only solution is to change to a z77 or z68 chipset motherboard. money again. But it's really such a waste to use a B75 chipset on your i5 3550.

■n i think (not so sure) i5 3550 won't support XMP (intel extreme memory profile) for memory OC bonus from intel. need at least i5 3570K. just differ by $22 approx compare to i5 3550. plus u can do OC on i5 3570K in the future.

for below 1k budget for a complete PC then just get the low end range of z77 chipset mainboard. if asus :

1. ASUS P8 Z77 - M
2. ASUS P8 Z77 - V LX
3. ASUS P8 Z77 - V LK
4. ASUS P8 Z77 - V (you might interest) ; Specs : reference

The B75 chipset designed for business orientated chipset. So there will be no overclocking feature but there maybe some remote access features like the Q67 and its soon to be follow on chipset.

The Z77 chipset is our performance orientated chipset and does allow overclocking.

Simply not true

I have an Asus brand motherboard with the b75 express chipset that can run memory up to 2200 O.C. and supports XMP profiles and can also overclock the CPU and GPU provided I am using an overclockable CPU.

and the best part... it was less than 100 dollars from newegg with shipping 😀

Next time, get a good quality motherboard instead of a run of the mill wannabe brand

I know this has already been answered above, but the 2 main differences are:

The Z77 chipset has 2 SATA6 ports and 4 SATA3 ports, the B75 chipset only has 1 SATA6 port and 5 SATA3 ports

The Z77 supports overclocking, the B75 does not.

There are other differences, but these are the most important IMO.
None of this probably matters to you and the B75 is almost certainly fine for 99% of people.

Disclaimer: My PC is an ASRock B75 m-itx motherboard with Intel i5 3330S processor.
