Question Compatability of M.2 NVMe SSD with Motherboard?

My motherboard is the ROG ASUS Maximus Z890 Extreme. I now wish to populate the M.2 slots 1 and 2 with Samsung 2TB 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD for a RAID 1 configuration.

However, when looking at ASUS' QVL I don't see this SSD in the list. There is the 1TB in the QVL, but not the 2TB. I can't imagine that the TB size of the M.2 ssd would disqualify it from being on the QVL.

Am I wrong?
Any thoughts from anyone?

To answer your question about SSD compatibility, so long as the slot is an M.2 slot and supports PCIe 4.0x4 drives, you're good to go by dropping in any make/model into the slots.

As my colleague above has asked, why RAID 1? I would also mention that RAID with SSD's are moot at this point as SSD's are horrible as storage drives(when the drive conks out, you lose your data with it and recovery is questionable).

Thus, for a backup mirror ssd. If one fails all I would have to do is remove it and plug in an equal or greater than GB capacity SSD.

Agree, both M.2 SSD will be connected and will mirror each other. If one drive fails, I can still boot my system up and replace the bad drive. What is wrong with that? Am I missing your point?

OK....

As said, the only thing a RAID 1 protects against is the very rare physical drive fail.
It is only good if you really need uninterrupted uptime. As in if you were running a webserver, and downtime == lost sales.

It does nothing against all the other forms of data loss. Accidental deletion, corruption, ransomware, etc, etc.

A good backup routine does all of that.
And in the (rare) event of physical drive fail, you simply slot in a new drive and recover from the most recent backup.


My main system (6x SSDs of various types) does an Incremental backup with Macrium, to my NAS, every night.
In the event of anything weird, incl a physically dead drive, I can recover any drive, or all of them, to any day in the last month.

If my system is working fine, but my data is lost, I can use the backup to restore the data. But if my system is not working (ie failed bootable SSD) then I can even boot my system.

I fully understand what you're saying.
But having to depend on a RAID 1 to recover other data is simply....wrong.


But to your original question - Yes, that drive will work.
Either singly or RAID 1.

About a year ago, I had to completely recover my C drive.
Installing a piece of software...it did things it specifically said it would not do.

The fastest way to 'fix things' was last nights Incremental Image.

Boot from the Macrium Reflect RescueUSB, click click....100% recovered, exactly as it was that morning. OS and applications.
