Compatibility MSI Z87-GD65 vs. new Intel CPUs (4790k and the like)

Hi,

I'm not a complete HW noob, but it's been quite a while since I built the last rig (family, responsibilities etc). I was wondering if you knowledgeable gents would be so kind to enlighten me on the following dilemmas:

1. Does the MSI Z87-GD65 motherboard support the newer Intel CPUs (i7-4790k and the similar gang)? The MSI website only mentioned (in a link that I've lost in the meanwhile)
2. If not, which would be the best CPU to stick into the aforementioned motherboard?
3. What would be the heat generated / power consumed by a suitable CPU combined with the MSI board above, 16 GB DDR3-1600, a 500 GB SSD and a 1 TB SATA3 drive? My video card is a 690 FX and the PSU a 750W Corsair, all in a big CoolerMaster case.

I'm not looking for extreme overclocking or the like, just do a bit of gaming and a bit of work on the box (some VMs and such).

Thanks!

Yes the MSI Z87-GD65 is LGA1150, which is what the Intel i7 4790k requires.
the 750w psu is more than enough to overclock your system with the 4790k

Socket aside, are there any other requirements (BIOS etc) I should be aware of?
I'd really hate buying a CPU and taking my existing machine apart just to realize the mobo doesn't support the CPU.

More accurate question: does this board support Devil's Canyon (i7-4790K, p/n BX80646I74790K) and/or Haswell Refresh processors (i7-4790, p/n CM8064601560113), or just "old" Haswell (i7-4770K, p/n BXF80646I74770K)?

ur gud to go. there are no specific requirements. its lga 1150 and will support any i3,i5,i7 4xxx models.

OK I got the motherboard and a 4790 (Haswell Refresh) rather than a 4790k.
After a long and painful struggle (forgot to plug in JPWR2, one particular cable wouldn't properly power my 690FX and so on), here I am installing Windows at the moment.

Now comes the fun question: the machine would not reboot. If I do a reboot, it doesn't start. If I power it off and on, everything works fine.
Any idea what could be the issue? The front panel Reboot button doesn't seem to work either.

Did u connect the reset switch from tthe reboot button to the pins. Refer to this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-r9qjlhQTX0
make sure all te front panel i/o switches are connected correctly

Connectors are well-connected (double-checked). I can initiate a reboot by pressing the Reboot button (or software from Windows), but the sequence does not complete. The motherboard displays debug code 00 and there's no video output. Fans etc keep on turning, but there's no kicking into the next phase.

check motherboard manufacture website for bios update to allow the cpu to run on that motherboard

It runs fine, no issues (posting from the box at the moment). The problem is that reboot isn't working.

Update: certainly not a connector issue. The reboot is working fine from the front panel button and from the motherboard button (the one between Power and OC Genie) while in BIOS, but none of them is working from Windows. I suspect some power management configuration / ACPI issue.

this might be a ram issue . is ur ram overclocked? u shud run memtest. check this out: http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?33815-Debug-Code-00

No overclocking. I have 4x 4GB Corsair PC-10600 sticks in my box.
However, if it were a RAM issue, how come it isn't happening while the RAM is in being used, but only at reboot (and before booting)?

Corrected - no reboot from the FP button as well. I checked the pin connections five times, also against the tutorial that MSI posted on youtube - everything is fine.
The problem is that the reboot can be initiated from Windows (Windows shuts down etc), but then it gets stuck at a pre-boot phase. There's no video signal coming to the monitor, the fans are spinning etc. If I shut down the computer from the FP power button and power it on again, everything works fine.

LE: found this, will try at home and report back.

The saga continues, my PC still wouldn't reboot.

Did notice one funny thing though: after resetting BIOS to default values, it reboots normally. It goes into Windows normally. If I reboot it from Windows, it doesn't work (same symptoms as above - no video output, fans are turning, no progress). Subsequent reboots (either from BIOS or from Windows) don't work either.

same problem here just with the g45 gaming

not reboot everything else is fine but on my side it occurs right at the bios if i save and exit monitor goes off pc running manuall shutdown requierd

but on the other side my friend has the same board the same compos but a 4770k and no problems there

the mobo simply doesnt support the hasswell refresh all we can do is waiting for a new bios or buy an z97 chipset there it works fine

Sorry for the late reply.
Fixed the reboot issue in the meanwhile - BIOS update to 1.10A3 from msihq.com did the trick. The computer now reboots fine without problems. It sometimes fails to go into sleep mode, but that's a different story.
Haswell refresh works fine, I have a 4790 (non-k) and no issues with it.

Did you have to update the bios in order for the 4790 to work?

Yes, you do and I suggest you update it as fast as possible.

Hello mates,

I've just bought MSI z87-gd65 gaming and intel i5 4690k cpu. When tried to make it running, it fails as "no signal" information is seen on screen. All fans are running (on CPU and on VGA) but debug code shows nothing. I tried to run it without RAM and without VGA (as I thought that it might be also my VGA that is crashed) - if it was my VGA's fault it all should work on while using on-board VGA. But it gave no result.

I don't know what to do... I think all is connected properly according to manuals.

Any idea why does it all go wrong?
