Amd fx 9590 compatibility with an asus q170m-c motherboard? I am a total newbie at building pcs. My son wants a powerful gaming pc. I have everything installed but I'm nervous that we have the incorrect cpu it doesn't seem to fit. Rather than damaging the cpu I thought I would see if anyone could help me. Sorry if this has been asked before and any tips on installing the cpu would also be greatly appreciated.

Solution
Each motherboard has a CPU Support List on their support web site. It lists all the CPUs that are compatible with the motherboard.

Intel motherboards will only accept Intel processors. AMD motherboards will only accept AMD processors. That motherboard is an Intel socket 1151 motherboard. You would want an Intel socket 1151 processor to go with it (preferred). That processor is an AMD AM3+ processor. You would want an AMD AM3+ motherboard to install it into.

No, it isn't compatible. If you want to find out what components work together easily, go to PCPartPicker and add your CPU into the CPU option and then click select motherboard and all that appear will be compatible.

Solution
Given the choice between returning the CPU or the motherboard, I would definitely return the FX-9590. It's a relatively poor performer and gives most who buy it a lot of trouble. You're far better off with an Intel CPU than with one of AMD's older FX chips.

Also to add to what wolf said, if you even attempted to install that AMD CPU make sure you didn't damage any pins in the CPU socket; Intel uses LGA(Line Grid Array) where the pins are on the board and not the CPU, where as AMD uses PGA(Pin Grid Array) where the pins are on the CPU and not on the motherboard.

I absolutely agree with this, return the FX-9590 for a Intel CPU. I would recommend a i5 6600 for your sons first gaming pc. It will handle todays AAA game titles fine, assuming he isn't going to be running anything in the background while playing his games.

I would keep the FX-9590. It is a great balanced chip. 8 cores allows for great multitasking potential while being able to play games at 60 FPS. If you build the PC correctly the first time, the FX-9590 should stay stable. You MUST use a water cooler. I recommend the GA-990FXA-UD3 Ultra. Also, my profile picture may be AMD, but I also like Intel. I would recommend Intel if you don't really multitask, and you want FPS levels above 120, simple raw power.
