Compress Youtube videos before downloading it

How can one compress Youtube videos before downloading it? It would be nice to be able to download a smaller file faster. Is there a way to accomplish this?

It depends on what format and what quality you download. The lower the quality (EX. 480p or 360p) the smaller the file. Also, FLV is one of the most compressed formats.
